BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's soccer team came up just short in their opening contest of the 2016 season against the No. 11 ranked St. Lawrence University on Friday, falling 3-1.
The Golden Eagles move to 0-1 on the young season while the Saints improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Green and Gold fell behind early, when St. Lawrence found the back of the net 11 minutes into play. Less than four minutes later, the Saints built on their lead, posting their second score of the contest, taking a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Brockport worked their way onto the board in the second half in the 56th minute when
Quintin Volpe buried a rebound from 12-yards out to make the count 2-1. The Golden Eagle defense held off the Saints for the bulk of the second half, but a third St. Lawrence goal worked its way through at the 75-minute mark, to post a 3-1 lead. Brockport was unable to work in another goal, ultimately falling 3-1.
"I am really proud of these guys," commented head coach gary LaPietra. "They played a really good second half, and rose to the challenge. With such a young team, it's a work in progress, but the team didn't back down, and played a tough second half."
The Golden Eagles fired off 15 shots, with five on goal, while holding their opponents to only nine shots on goal.
Joseph Romano got the start, and saw all 90 minutes in goal for the Green and Gold, where he picked up six saves on the day.
Brockport will be back in action tomorrow, Sept 3 when they take on Clarkson University at 12 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
