Brockport Takes Home Opener over DII Roberts Wesleyan

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's volleyball team posted a decisive 3-1 win over Division II rival Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday to move to 4-1 on the season.

The Golden Eagles came out strong in the first set, and with a five point run fueled by a pair of kills from Emma Stoltz and an ace from Christa Mickol pulled out to the early 7-1 lead.

Brockport worked to continue to distance itself, and behind a 9-1 run, pushed to a 20-8 lead after three DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore kills. Two straight points sealed the set for the Golden eagles, as they took the set 25-13.

The Golden Eagles faltered in the second set, trailing throughout. The Green and Gold fought to tie the contest at 16-16 after a Jamie Schlesinger kill, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles fell in a tight 25-21 contest.

Head coach Steve Pike's squad found their rhythm in the third set, posting another convincing win. A pair of Brianna Richardson kills got things going for the Green and Gold, as they pushed out to a 5-1 lead.

A 6-1 run helped the Golden Eagles pad their lead, with kills from Ortiz-Whittemore, Schlesinger and Richardson, and the streak capped off with a Jamie Schlesinger ace to post a 16-8 lead. Brockport held their distance, and a Richardson kill put the finishing touches on the 25-15 win.

A three point run to start the fourth set, featuring a pair of Ortiz-Whittemore kills, got the Golden Eagles off to a hot start. Roberts Wesleyan went on a mini-run of their own to close the gap to 5-4 before the Golden Eagles took control, taking the fourth set 25-18.
The outside hitters led the offensive charge in this outing, led by Stoltz who ended the day with 17 kills, and Ortiz-Whittemore who added 13.

Maddy Taylor had a team-leading 20 digs, and also added three assists which was second on the squad to Noelle Poloncarz who had her second 50-assist match of the young season, tallying 52.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Sept. 9 when they take on Beloit College and Utica College in the University of Rochester Invitational at 4 and 8 pm respectively.
