Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport falls to Geneseo, 86-66

GENESEO- N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team sustained their first loss in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, falling at SUNY Geneseo, 86-66

The Golden Eagles move to 9-3 on the season and have a 4-1 mark in league play while the Knights improve to 9-3 on the year and 4-1 in conference action.

Brockport saw the hot shooting Knights post the first score, a triple, but back-to-back scores from Matthew Smith gave the Green and Gold a 6-5 edge under three minutes into the contest.

The game was evenly contested, with neither team able to pull away. After a brief moment with the lead, the Golden Eagles traded advantages with Geneseo, and worked to a one-point lead after Hamed Shamseldin knocked down a jumper for the 19-18 edge with 9:31 to play. The Brockport lead as short lived however, as the Knights posted a 13-0 run to pull ahead 35-22 by the 4:45 mark.

Head coach Greg Dunne's squad was forced to play catch-up, with a Dwayne Daniel layup to close the half making the count 44-32.

At the midway point, the Golden Eagles were led by Devonn Gavin who had eight points, with Smith turning in seven and Shamseldin netting six. The Green and Gold forced 10 Knight turnovers and outrebounded their counterparts, 25-22 in the opening stanza.

The Green and Gold cut the deficit to single digits to start the second half, following a Justin Summers score and a pair of free throws from Shamseldin to make the count 36-37 at 16:37 to play.

Again, the hot shooting Knights built out a lead, and the Golden Eagles fought to pull within striking distance. Following a pair of treys from Smith and a Gavin layup, Brockport was within seven at the 10:35 mark.

The Golden Eagle defense struggled to stifle the Knight offense, as Geneseo went on a 12-0 to the 6:49 mark, pushing out to a 68-52 lead. The Green and Gold couldn't produce enough on the offensive end enough to overcome their deficit, as they would fall 86-66.

Smith and Gavin led the Green and Gold offense, with 16 points apiece. Smith added two assists and two steals, while Gavin snagged six boards. Shamseldin finished with nine points and six rebounds as Summers and Daniel each added eight, with Summers chipping in six rebounds.

Brockport finished the day, forcing 16 turnovers, which they used for 15 points. The Golden Eagles edged Geneseo in second chance points (11-3), bench points (34-18), points in the paint (34-32), and fast break points (8-4).
