Golden Eagles Bury The Bengals In I-90 Bowl

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 11 ranked College at Brockport football team moved to 8-0 on the season with a 33-0 victory over Buffalo State. This is the second straight week the Golden Eagles have shut out their opponents, and the third time this season.

The first quarter of play saw defensive prowess from both teams, with Brockport scoring the only points on a 25-yard field goal from Brett Renzi. That changed quickly in the second quarter however, as the Brockport offense came alive, scoring three touchdowns in the 15 minute span to take a commanding 24-0 halftime lead.

With just under ten minutes to go in the stanza, the Golden Eagles put together a drive led by two long receptions from DaQuan Hubbard and Joseph Ortiz, giving them first and goal at the seven. Joe Germinerio found Jerry Thompson on the next play for his second touchdown in as many games, putting Brockport up 10-0.

On the ensuing Buffalo State drive, Matt Szymanski forced a fumble on the first offensive play, and Alex West was there to recover it at the Bengal 19-yard line, putting the Green and Gold offense directly in scoring position. Germinerio would capitalize a few plays later, rushing one in himself from 14 yards out to extend the lead.

West, who ended the day with 3.5 sacks, got to the Buffalo State quarterback twice on the next drive, forcing a punt that was fair caught by Brockport on their own 23. Once again, the Golden Eagles were quick to tack on, scoring on the first play of the drive to take a commanding 24-0 first half lead. This time it was Germinerio finding Hubbard for the 77-yard TD grab.

West picked off the Bengal quarterback on the next drive, but with only 0:36 seconds left on the clock, the score would hold at 24-0 going into the half.

On the first Buffalo State drive of the second half, the Green and Gold defense put some points on the board, sacking QB Kyle Hoppy in his own end zone for the safety which put Brockport up 26-0. It was once again West who was in on the sack, putting an exclamation point on his fantastic defensive game.

Hubbard added another touchdown reception later in the third quarter, this time a five-yard grab from Germinerio that put the score at its eventual final of 33-0.

The sophomore receiver finished his day with 112 receiving yards to go with his pair of touchdowns, and was aided by Tyree Brown and Ortiz, who combined for 86 yards receiving. Christian Hollister led the rushing game for the second straight game, taking 13 carries for 69 yards.

West led the defensive unit with nine tackles (seven solo, two assisted), and was backed up by Julius Mizro who finished with six, including a sack. Julius Brunson had his fourth interception of the season, one of three Golden Eagle turnovers in the game.

Brockport out-gained Buffalo State 374-124 on the day, including 148-11 on the ground. The Golden Eagle defense, which ranks first in the country in run stopping, has not allowed more than 25 rushing yards in a game since the week four matchup against Utica College.

The Golden Eagles are now 6-0 in the Empire 8 conference, and will have a chance to clinch the conference title at home next weekend when they host Alfred University for a game beginning at 12 p.m.
