Brockport Sweeps Second Day of SUNYAC Pool Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team swept the competition in the second day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, winning over SUNY Geneseo and SUNY New Paltz. The Golden Eagles move to 13-7 (6-0 SUNYAC) on the 2017 season.
 
Game One vs SUNY Geneseo: W, 3-2 (23-25, 25-10, 23-25, 26-24, 15-11)
 
Brockport jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in set one, with kills from Meaghan Mastro, Laiken Fox and blocks from Mastro, Noelle Poloncarz, and DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore. The Golden Eagles found some trouble midway through the game after a five-point run from the Knights to trail 13-11. The Green and Gold maintained the lead until late in the match when Geneseo took a 20-19 advantage. Brockport attempted to recapture the lead but fell short, losing set one 25-23.
 
The Golden Eagles wasted no time starting out hot with an eight-point rally to start the second set. The Brockport offense did not stop there as they extended their lead to 17-3 with kills from Jamie Schlesinger, Brianna Richardson, Fox, and Ortiz-Whittemore. The Green and Gold easily closed out the second set with a demanding 25-10 victory and finishing with a team hitting percentage of .533 hitting percent.
 
The third set was tight, as neither team had more than a two-point advantage throughout the whole game. Brockport took a late 20-18 advantage, but the Knights answered with a four-point streak of their own to take reclaim lead 22-20. The Brockport offense could not get back into the game, as Geneseo held onto the lead to win by a score of 25-23.
 
The Green and Gold jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set. Brockport's defense struggled as the Knights took and maintained the lead until late in the game. Brockport was down 23-20, until a three-point run to tie the game at 23-23 with kills from Schlesinger and Richardson. After both teams traded points, Brockport notched the last two of the fourth set to win 26-24, and to force a fifth set.
 
The fifth set was neck-and-neck early as both teams traded points to set the score 6-6. Brockport tallied two back-to-back kills from Schlesinger to extend their lead to 8-6. Geneseo fought back to take a 11-10 advantage, but the Golden Eagles closed out the last set on a five-point rally with points coming from Aimee Spilman, Fox, and Ortiz-Whittemore to win the match 15-11.
 
The Brockport offense was led by Fox and Richardson as they both accounted 15 kills, where Schlesinger had 13, and Ortiz-Whittemore finished with 10. Poloncarz finished the game with 50 assists and 17 digs. Schlesinger led the defense with a game with 20 digs, where Maddy Taylor totaled for 16.
 
Game Two vs SUNY New Paltz: W, 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25, 16)
 
Brockport trailed early in the first set, as the Hawks jumped out to a 7-1 lead. The Golden Eagles answered with back-to-back six-point streaks to take a lead 16-10, with points coming from Poloncarz, Schlesinger, Mastro, Fox and Ortiz-Whittemore. The Green and Gold held onto the lead for the remainder of the game, as they closed out the first set by a score of 25-17.
 
The Green and Gold jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the second set. The Brockport offense dominated as they extended their lead to 17-7. The Golden Eagles finished up the second set with ease winning by a score of 25-12. The Brockport offense finished the second set with .359 hitting percentage and only two hitting errors.
 
The third set was a close battle early between both teams, trading the first few points back and forth. Brockport started to create some separation after three consecutive two point runs, to take a 13-8 advantage. The Golden Eagles earned three straight points midway through the game to make the score 19-12. The Green and Gold rallied off four points late with points coming from Ortiz-Whittemore and Mastro. Brockport closed out set three and their second match of the day by a score of 25-16, with a kill from Mastro.
 
Fox led the Golden Eagles offensively with 11 kills, and Ortiz-Whittemore accounted for nine. Mastro finished with seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage, and also adding four blocks. Poloncarz paced the offense and defense handing out 34 assists and a tallying up 10 digs. Kathleen Irwin, Schlesinger, and Taylor all finished with nine digs apiece.
 
Brockport will be back in action this Wednesday at home, where they face Alfred State with the game slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
