Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nelson's Sharp Shooting Lifts Brockport To First Win

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's basketball team got back to .500 Saturday afternoon with a 76-59 victory over William Patterson University in the consolation game of the AJ Buchanan Classic. The Golden Eagles are now 1-1 on the season, while William Patterson drops to 1-2.

Josh Nelson was the leading scorer for the Green and Gold, dropping 17-points, with all of his baskets from the floor coming from beyond the arc. The junior went five-for-eight from distance, and knocked in both of the free throw attempts he took.

The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start in this contest, scoring the first 10 points of the game and never looking back. They expanded that lead to 15 points at 26-11 just over midway through the half on a Nelson three, and would sustain that lead for the final eight minutes, carrying a 12-point gap into the break.

Play went back and forth between the two squads for the majority of the second half, with the Pioneers closing the margin to as few as seven twice. Brockport held strong though, and with an emphatic dunk by David Clark, opened the lead back up to 14 with less than five minutes remaining.

Freshman duo Michael Pavinelli and David McPartland both got chances in the final few minutes of the game, scoring the final three points for the Green and Gold to give them the 76-59 victory.

Hamed Shamseldin and Justin Summers were second and third on the team in scoring, combining for 30 points. Shamseldin was three-of-four from long distance, and contributed four assists to go with his sixteen points. Summers was dominant on the boards, bringing down 12 rebounds for the double-double.

Michael O'Hara was also strong on the glass, grabbing seven boards to go with his nine points. Tyler Collins chipped in eight on three-of-four shooting (two-for-two from three), and dished out a team-high five assists.

Brockport men's basketball will be off until Monday, November 27th when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a matchup with the Medaille College Mavericks. They'll open their home slate the following day when they host Hobart at 7 p.m.
