BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team won their third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship Saturday evening with a 3-0 win over Fredonia State. The Golden Eagles move to 26-8 on the 2017 season, where the Blue Devils drop to 22-10.
The Golden Eagles came out swinging in the first set as they took a 9-4 edge over Fredonia on a four-point run with a pair of kills from
Meaghan Mastro and one from
Laiken Fox and
Jamie Schlesinger. They pushed further ahead 13-5 after back-to-back blocks from
Brianna Richardson and Schlesinger and a kill from Fox. The Brockport offense kept rolling as they tacked on a pair of kills from
DeAnna Ortiz-Whittemore to set the score at 19-9. The Golden Eagles held onto the lead as they won the first set 25-16.
The Green and Gold kept on pace as they jumped to an 8-3 edge over the Blue Devils in set two.
Noelle Poloncarz led the early charge with a pair of aces and Mastro and Schlesinger added a kill apiece. Brockport strung together a four-point streak to extend their lead to 12-4 with points from Ortiz-Whittemore, Fox, and
Christa Mickol. The Golden Eagles were up 20-12 but Fredonia locked down to eventually trim down the lead to set up a set point at 24-19. Brockport slipped up as the Blue Devils then pieced together a six-point rally to tie the game up at 24-24. The Green and Gold gathered themselves to eventually hammer down the next two points to win the second set by a score of 26-24.
Brockport trailed early in set three and Fredonia came out hot taking a 4-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles fought back to reclaim the lead 8-7 off a four-point run with a kill from Fox and Schlesinger, an ace from Mastro, and a block from Richardson. The Green and Gold found an offensive movement as they went on a 12-1 run over Fredonia to set the score at 24-12. The SUNYAC championship match was closed out a kill from Schlesinger to win by a final score of 25-16.
The Golden Eagles were lead offensively by Fox who hammered down 14 kills, where Ortiz-Whittemore accounted for 13. Mastro finished the match with nine kills on a .667 hitting percentage. Poloncarz paced the offense as she dished out 41 assists. The Golden Eagles defense were led by Poloncarz who racked up 11 digs and Schlesinger finished with 10.
Poloncarz and Fox were both named to the All-Tournament team, while Ortiz-Whittemore, who was dominant in both the semifinals in finals was named SUNYAC Tournament MVP.
With this win Brockport earns an automatic bid into the NCAA volleyball tournament for the third consecutive year where they will wait to hear who they play on Monday afternoon.
