UNION, N.J. – The Brockport baseball team split their opening day double header, defeating Manhattanville College 6-1 before falling to host Kean 9-3.
Sam McCumiskey picked up the win on the mound for Brockport, throwing six scoreless innings.
Game 1 vs. Manhattanville: W, 6-1
After threatening in the first and second, the Green and Gold were able to get on the board in the bottom of the third when
Paul Ludden doubled down the right field line to score
Avery Brooks who had singled earlier in the frame.
That lead would stand until the bottom of the fifth when they extended the lead, scratching across three more runs.
Drew DeBlasiis got things started when he was hit by a pitch and then stole second, putting him in position to score after Brooks reached on a throwing error by the short stop. A walk, another fielding error, and a sac fly allowed two more runs to cross.
McCumiskey pitched a gem, allowing just six hits while striking out five and not giving up a walk.
Casey Piazza faced the minimum in his inning of work, before
Nick Jerolimov came in for the two inning save, allowing two hits and striking out a batter.
Brockport tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Kretzler and LaRosa both scored, bringing the score to its eventual final of 6-1.
Game 2 vs. Kean: L, 9-3
Brockport struggled on the mound against Kean, allowing nine earned runs.
Austin Spindler got the start for the Golden Eagles, going 3 1/3 and giving up six runs on six hits.
Mike D'Eletto pitched well in the late innings, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out a Kean batter.
Two of the Brockport runs came in the top of the third, when Ludden drove in
Dane Cala on a sacrifice fly to center.
Matt Van Allen was next up, and drove in Brooks with a single. They were able to tack on one more in the eighth on a DeBlasiis sac fly, but it was to no avail as Kean was able to hold on for the 9-3 victory.
The baseball team will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Virginia beach for games against Virginia Wesleyan and Ithaca College.
