The College at Brockport baseball team split their double header with Virginia Wesleyan College Friday afternoon, falling 5-3 in the opener before taking the second contest 7-6. The team now sits at 2-2 on the season, having split both of their double headers thus far.
Â
Game 1: L, 5-3
Paul Ludden provided most of the offense for the Golden Eagles in the first outing, going 2-4 at the plate while driving in two of the three runs. He started off right away in the top of the first, driving in
Dane Cala from third with a ground out to the short stop.
Â
That 1-0 lead would hold until the bottom of the third, when the Marlins were able to string together a few good innings in a row, plating five between the third and sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Brockport nearly completed a comeback in the seventh and eighth, when
Drew DeBlasiis and Ludden both drove in runs to bring the Green and Gold back to within two.
Â
They continued to threaten in the top of the eighth, as a
Lou Miceli singled to put two on with one out, but a timely double play ended the threat, and a 1-2-3 ninth sealed the deal in the opening game.
Â
Austin Spindler and
Dave Sicina split the first six innings of work on the mound, allowing five runs (four of which were earned) on 16 hits.
Maddux Minton came in for the final two innings of work and shut down the Marlin hitters, allowing just one hit while striking out a pair.
Â
Game 2: W, 7-6
The team came out to a slow start in the second game of the double header, giving up three runs in the early going to fall behind 3-0. The bats came alive in the top of the fourth, as Brockport plated all seven of their runs, recording six hits in the inning.
Â
DeBlasiis got the rally started with one out when he was hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a
Joe Bender single. He then scored on another single by
Luke Gilbert, who advanced to second on the throw home.
Â
A passed ball allowed Bender to score and the other runners to move up, putting a runner on third with one out. After another out was made, two straight walks loaded the bases for
Avery Brooks, who singled in a run, leaving the bases loaded.
Â
The fourth run was scored on a wild pitch, leaving runners on second and third for Ludden, who continued his hot hitting with a two-RBI single. The inning came full circle a few batters later when DeBlasiis came back to the plate and singled in Ludden, wrapping up the seven-run frame.
Â
Virginia Wesleyan made a comeback attempt with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but
Nick Jerolimov came in for the final 2.1 innings, striking out three and not allowing a hit for the long save.
Sam McCumiskey picked up his second win in as many outings, throwing 4.2 innings while striking out five and allowing four earned runs.
Â
Baseball will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. when they square off with Ithaca College in Virginia Beach.
