GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No. 9 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team opened their 2017 season on Sunday, overcoming a first half deficit to bypass Denison University, 11-5
The Golden Eagles open their 2017 campaign with a 1-0 record while the Big Red fall to 1-1.
It took some time for the Green and Gold to get back in the swing of things, finding themselves in an early 3-0 hole. But
Kelly Wall ended the scoring silence for the Golden Eagles, burring a free position shot to get on the board, at 3-1.
The opening Brockport goal got things rolling on the offensive end, as
Taylor Thomas and
Jessica Boddery each netted a goal within a minute of one another to cut the Brockport deficit to 4-3. In the final 20 seconds,
Hannah Cullen broke away from the pack and snuck a shot past the Denison net minder to even the count at 4-4 heading into the break.
Wall opened the scoring again in the second half, this time forcing the Big Red goalkeeper to turn it over, and netted a goal on an open net at 23:41 for the 5-4 edge. The goals kept coming for the Green and Gold, as
Samantha Dooling worked into the scoring column, followed by a third Wall goal to give Brockport a 7-4 cushion.
By the 17:47 mark, the Green and Gold notched another score, this time off an
Andrea Zlinsky free position shot to post an 8-4 lead. The Golden Eagles saw Dennison sneak in their fifth goal, but quickly answered in the form of a Boddery goal, off a Thomas set up to maintain their four goal advantage.
Head coach Steve Wagner's squad hit double digits by the four-minute mark, with back-to-back scores from
Jillian Babinsky and
Heather Conklin to post an 11-5 lead. The Green and Gold would hold on and hold off the Big Red to pick up the win.
Brockport outpaced their counterparts in several categories, with a 32-17 edge in shots, 25-19 advantage in ground balls, and went 10-for-18 in the draw circle. Wall led the way with the hat-trick, also snagging five draws and three ground balls. The Green and Gold showcased balanced scoring with eight different Golden Eagles working into the scoring column.
On the defensive end,
Katie Curran led the way with three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Thomas added two CT's and five GB's.
Sarah Brown got the start in the goal, seeing all 60 minutes of action, and stopping six shots.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on March 1 when they open their home season, playing host to Rochester Institute of Technology, with opening draw set for 4 p.m.
