NAPLES, Fla.- The College at Brockport softball team dropped a pair of games to open the Gene Cusic Classic on Saturday, falling to Dominican University 3-2 to start the day, and tripping against to Salem State University 9-2 in game two. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season.
Game One
Brockport fell behind 2-0 in the third inning giving up a two run blast in the top of the frame. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning when freshman
Casey Danko connected on her first career home run.
Dominican was able to push across a run in the top of the fifth inning. The Green and Gold answered back in the bottom of the sixth, when Danko struck again, ripping an RBI double to left center, scoring
Alison Missavage, who led off the frame with a double.
The Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lindsay Wachna laced a single up the middle and
Lexi Abernathy tried to score from second base but was gunned down by the center fielder.
Danko had a brilliant start to her career going 2-for-3 from the plate, with two extra base hits and driving in both of Brockport's runs.
Amanda Colon suffered her first loss of the season, pitching a complete game and striking out two, while giving up six hits.
Game Two
Salem State struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the second inning, two of which were unearned runs. The Golden Eagles cut the Vikings lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, when
Meghan Cullen connected on a two RBI double, scoring
Mikelle Deck and
Jessica Koneski.
Salem State was able to extend their lead by scoring one in the sixth, and adding three more insurance runs in the seventh. The Green and Gold were unable to get a clutch hit, scattering 10 hits but only scoring two runs and stranding seven runners on base.
Koneski went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and scored one of the Golden Eagles two runs, while Danko chipped in with two hits.
Wachna suffered her first loss of the season, after giving up one earned run in 3.0 innings pitched, while striking out two.
Michaela Contreras pitched the final 4.0 innings, giving up four earned runs and fanning one.
Brockport will face Curry College at 9 a.m. then Wilmington College at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 12 at Collier Regional Park in Naples, Fla.
