Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Brockport fight comes up just short against SJFC, 10-9

VICTOR, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team dropped a nail biter on Thursday, going toe-to-toe with St. John Fisher College, just missing 10-9.

The Golden Eagles fall to 1-3 on the young season while the Cardinals move to 3-1 in 2017.

Brockport was forced to play catch up early, as the Green and Gold saw Fisher score three straight to open play, all three on man-up opportunities. Jake Recor stepped up to put an end to the Golden Eagle scoring drought, as he buried a Jake Giudice set up to get on the board 3-1 with 3:25 to play in the first. The Cardinals would sneak in one more, as Brockport headed into the first break trailing 4-1.

In the second, the scoring was much more balanced, with the Green and Gold coming out strong, posting two quick scores from Zach Cook and Mark Robinson to pull within one at 4-3 with 12:12 to play in the half. The Cardinals connected on two shots to close the frame with a 6-3 lead.

The even play continued in the third period, as each squad found the back of the cage twice. Brockport saw the Cardinals open play with a goal, but Recor had the answer in his second goal, this time from Colton Oliver. The Green and Gold again had to fight to post an answer, with Corey Choberka netting a goal to cut the Green and Gold deficit to 8-5 heading into the final period.

Brockport wasted no time to start the fourth frame, as Giuduce worked in a Robinson assist just 15 seconds into play. At the 9:23 mark, the Golden Eagles worked in another score, this time Liam Cannon buried the Robinson pass, while Giudice fired off a shot just eight seconds later, to knot the contest at 8-8.

The Green and Gold saw their counterparts take advantage of a man-up opportunity to regain the lead at the six-minute mark.  The lead was short lived, as Robinson found the back of the net, to tie the contest at 9-9.

In the last 30 seconds, the Cardinals snuck in a goal to take the 10-9 lead, and despite a good look for the Green and Gold, they couldn't find the back of the cage, falling 10-9.

Giedice, Recor and Robinson each netted two goals, with Robinson adding two assists. On the defensive side, the Green and Gold had a balanced attack with six Golden Eagles accounting for a caused turnover. Cook led the way in the face off circle, picking up 18 wins and eight ground balls. Giudice also scooper five GB's with Steven Gurin snagging three.

Conor Nowak saw all 60 minutes in the cage for Brockport, where he made six saves.

Brockport went 11-for-11 on clears for the day, and forced 14 Cardinal turnovers. The Green and Gold also was strong in the face off circle, winning 18-of-22, and outmatched their counterparts in shots on goal by a margin of 25-16.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on March 18 when they head to Utica College with opening face off set for 1 p.m.
