CANEADA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team (11-7, 4-1 SUNYAC) split their doubleheader against Oneonta on Monday afternoon, winning the second game in extra innings.
Nick Jerolimov earned the win, throwing the final 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
Game 1: L, 11-5
Austin Spindler got the start in game one, taking the loss after pitching the first 3 innings. The trio of
Maddux Minton,
Casey Piazza, and
Jake Miller threw the remainder of the game.
After the Red Dragons opened up a 6-0 lead, Brockport closed the gap in the third and fourth, notching two runs in both innings to move to within two.
Mike D'Eletto crossed the plate on a balk, and was followed by
Dane Cala who scored on a sac fly from
Avery Brooks.
In the fourth,
Tom Kretzler scored on an RBI groundout before Cala singled to center to drive in
Drew DeBlasiis. Cala ended the game with three hits in four at-bats, and recorded an RBI & run scored.
Oneonta extended their lead again with a four-run fifth inning, opening up a 10-4 lead that proved too great to overcome. Kretzler scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth, but it was to no avail as Oneonta took game one 11-5.
Miller pitched extremely well in his 1.1 innings of work, retiring all four batters he faced to shut down the hot Oneonta offense.
Game 2: W, 5-3
The eventual game-winning run came in the eighth inning of this contest, with Cala beating out a potential double play to allow
Joe Bender to score from third. Bender had led off the inning with a single up the middle to bring up Jerolimov, who was making his first career plate appearance.
The senior worked the count to 3-2 before laying down a sacrifice-bunt to move Bender into scoring position. Bender made it to third during the next at-bat, making a heads up play to steal third when ball four to D'Eletto bounced away from the catcher.
Cala was up next to drive him in, and proceeded to steal second during the next at bat. Brooks came up with a clutch line drive single through the middle to score Cala, giving the Golden Eagles some insurance.
Jerolimov threw his third straight scoreless inning to close it out in the bottom of the ninth, and even ended it himself by starting a 1-6-3 double play to secure the victory. The win is the seniors third of the season, all of which have come in relief appearances, as Brockport has found a knack for late-inning comebacks this season.
Mark Giallanzo got the start in the contest and had a nice outing, allowing just three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work, striking out five in the process.
Brockport also scored twice in the third, with
Paul Ludden and
Anthony Eaton both registering RBI's. D'Eletto scored one of those runs, and scored again in the fifth on a Brooks RBI single. Brooks led the team at the plate on the day, going 3-4 with two RBI's and a run scored.
Brockport will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Cortland for a three-game set with the Red Dragons.
