ANNANDALE, N.Y. – The Brockport baseball team picked up two wins on the road against Bard College Sunday afternoon to move back above .500 at 4-3.
Nick Jerolimov and
Sam McCumiskey each picked up a win on the day.
Game 1: W, 9-6
Austin Spindler got the start for Brockport in the first outing, allowing three runs in his 3.2 innings of work, only of one which was earned. The senior came out with two outs in the bottom of the fourth after loading the bases, but was helped out by
Mark Giallanzo who came in and struck out his hitter to work out of trouble.
This game was close throughout, as the Golden Eagles needed to use a comeback effort to take home the win after trailing 6-4 after six innings. That comeback bid began in the top of the seventh, when Kyle Zigner came in to pitch for the Raptors and struggled with his control, walking three Brockport hitters that forced in a run when combined with a fielding error by the center fielder.
The eventual game-winner came in the top of the eighth, as back-to-back RBI singles by
Drew DeBlasiis and
Jack Wallwork with one out gave the Golden Eagles a 7-6 edge.
Charlie Serino drove in the third run of the inning, giving the squad some insurance when he reached on a fielders choice that drove in DeBlasiis.
Luke Gilbert drove in his third run of the game in the top of the ninth, giving the Green and Gold a three-run lead which was more than enough for Jerolimov. The senior hurled the final three innings of the contest, giving up just two hits and not allowing a run. He's now thrown 7.1 scoreless innings this season, giving up just four hits in the process while striking out eight.
Game 2: W, 9-2
Unlike the opening game of the doubleheader, game two was never in doubt, as Brockport used nine runs in the first three innings to put the game out of reach.
The scoring onslaught began in the top of the second when
Nik Malachowski got the inning started with one of his three hits on the day. Gilbert followed him up with a single up the middle before
Liam O'Leary drew a walk to load the bases.
Justin Valentino drove in the first run with a groundout to second, before the big blow of the inning which came off the bat of Serino. The sophomore ripped a triple down the left field line, driving in Gilbert and O'Leary while putting himself in prime scoring position with one man out.
Dane Cala drove him in when he reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, and eventually came all the way around to score himself on a wild pitch, representing the fifth Golden Eagle to cross the plate in the frame.
It was a similar story in the third, with Malachowski once again in the center of the action, driving a single to left field after Bender was hit by a pitch to start the inning. O'Leary and Valentino hit back-back-back RBI singles with one out to plate the pair, before the Bard pitcher lost his command, walking Serino to load the bases and then hitting Cala to send home the eighth Brockport run. Brooks drove in his second run of the day with some situational hitting, grounding out to the shortstop to score the ninth and final Golden Eagle run.
Sam McCumiskey has been excellent to begin the season and kept that up today, allowing just one unearned run in five innings, and striking out three to move to 3-0 on the season.
Ryan Greco came in for an inning of relief, also allowing an unearned run, but closing out the game to complete the 9-2 victory.
Brockport will have a week long break before making their Spring Break trip to Florida, which will begin at 10 a.m. next Saturday against Farmingdale State.
