No. 3/14 Brockport offense overpowers Oswego, 14-3

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 3/14 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team opened State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday with a convincing win over Oswego State, 14-3

The Golden Eagles improve to 7-1 on the season and have a mark of 1-0 in the league while the Lakers fall to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in the SUNYAC.

Brockport saw the Lakers come out aggressive, scoring back-to-back goals to take the early 2-0 lead with 28:15 to play. The Green and Gold offense sparked, ending the Oswego run, and connecting on six straight goals. Taylor Thomas got things started, burying a Heather Conklin set up.

It took till the 10 minute mark for the Golden Eagles to find the back of the cage again, but they would post five scores in the final 10 minutes to take the 6-2 lead into the break. Jessica Boddery connected with Thomas for a goal, with Jillian Babinsky posting a pair of scores to give Brockport the 4-2 lift. Hannah Cullen and Conklin found the back of the cage for the final goals of the half.

It was all Brockport in the second frame as the Green and Gold would go on to score eight second half goals. The Golden Eagles opened the period with six straight scores, with Babinsky netting her third to get things started. Andrea Zlinsky, Tess Knight and Kelly Wall worked into the scoring column with a goal each, while Conklin and Boddery added goals for the 12-2 lead.

Following an Oswego goal at the 6:06 mark, Conklin and Cullen each found the back of the cage to push the Golden Eagles out to a 14-3 lead, which would stand for the win.

Brockport outmatched their counterparts in several categories, including shots (40-8), shots on goal (29-8), ground balls (27-16), draw controls (11-7) and free position shots (9-1). The Green and Gold forced 24 Laker turnovers, and went a perfect 15-for-15 on clears.

While the Brockport offense shined, the Green and Gold defense was key as well. Nikki Nolan and Cassandra Minerd both came up big on the defensive end, with each earning four caused turnovers, three draws and two ground balls. Lauren Mancini and Conklin each added two CT's, while Mancini lead all with six ground balls, and Wall added four.

Sara Shaddock got the start, and her first win of the season in all 60 minutes of action where she made four stops.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action when they continue SUNYAC play, as they head to SUNY Geneseo on April 4 for a 4 p.m. game.
