BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 12/18 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team sailed to a strong State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Tuesday, downing Fredonia, 18-8.
The Golden Eagles improve to 9-1 on the season and have a 3-0 mark in league play while the Blue Devils fall to 2-10 in 2017 and 1-3 in the SUNYAC.
Head coach
Stephen Wagner's squad came out strong, opening the contest with five unanswered goals.
Kelly Wall got things started, with
Hannah Cullen and
Heather Conklin adding goals within a minute of one another. The Green and Gold continued to spread the offense, as
Taylor Thomas and
Tess Knight each found the back of the cage for the early 5-0 lead.
Brockport saw the Blue Devils sneak in a goal at the 20:24 mark, but Conklin and
Jillian Babinsky worked to post the answers, to add to their lead, a 7-1 edge by the midway mark. Fredonia worked in their second score, but Brockport rattled off three straight, with Boddery, Cullen and Conklin each connecting for the 12-3 edge.
The two squads would trade goals to close the half, with Brockport's
Samantha Dooling burying a Thomas set up with less than a second remaining to take a 13-4 lead into the break.
In the second half, the scoring slowed slightly, but the Green and Gold still posted a pair of scores to open play. Babinsky netted back-to-back goals to push the Green and Gold out to a 15-4 lead. The Blue Devils found the back of the cage at the 20:35 mark, but the Golden Eagles had a two-goal answer, with Thomas and Boddery each connecting for a 17-6 edge.
Brockport would see Fredonia add a pair of goals, with a free position Conklin goal splitting the scores, as Brockport closed out the 18-8 win.
The Green and Gold crushed their opponents in shots, with a 38-18 tally, with an impressive 35 of the Golden Eagles' shots on goal. Brockport scooped up 27 ground balls to their counterparts 15 and forced 25 Blue Devil turnovers.
Babinsky was a force on both sides of the ball, accounting for three goals and four caused turnovers, adding a ground ball and draw control win. Five Golden Eagles picked up two caused turnovers each, with
Lauren Mancini, Zlinsky,
Cassandra Minerd, Thomas and
Ashley Tack each picking up a pair. Thomas and Cullen added five ground balls each while Zlinsky scooped up four and Mancini added three.
Two net-minders saw action for the Green and Gold, with
Sara Shaddock picking up the start, making three saves in over 36 minutes of action, in route to the win.
Sarah Brown came in for the final 23:40 of play, picking up three stops.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 15, when they host SUNY Oneonta. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m., with the contest serving as senior day for the Green and Gold. Brockport will honor its six seniors in a ceremony held prior to the contest.
