ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team fell 12-8 at nationally ranked St. John Fisher Wednesday evening, dropping to 15-10 on the season. It took a late comeback from the Cardinals to earn the win, as they improve to 16-6 on the season.
Brockport got off to a hot start in the top of the first, scoring three runs to take an early lead.
Dane Cala got the rally started when he reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop, and advanced to third on an
Avery Brooks single.
Paul Ludden loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch, bringing up
Matt Van Allen who drove in the first run with a sac fly to center.
Some aggressive base running from Books landed him on third after the sac fly, where he was driven in after an RBI groundout from
Anthony Eaton.
Tom Kretzler wrapped up the scoring with a two-out triple to left field, allowing Ludden to easily score from second.
Brockport extended their lead all the way to 6-0 after adding two in the third and one in the fourth, but a big five run inning from Fisher in the bottom of the fourth brought them back to within one.
Mike D'Eletto helped them regain that cushion in the top of the fifth with an RBI double that sparked a two-run inning for the Green and Gold. That would mark the end of the Brockport scoring however, as the Cardinals were able to keep them off the board for the final four frames.
Fisher took the lead in the bottom of the eighth with their second big inning of the game, this time crossing the plate six times to take a firm 12-8 lead that they would hold on to. DJ Mendenhall picked up the win after coming in for relief late.
Jason Hellwig got the start for Brockport on the mound as part of a "platoon" pitching rotation during the game, throwing the first 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit and no runs.
Kretzler was the leader at the dish for the Green and Gold, going 2-for-5 and picking up two RBI's while scoring a run of his own.
Brockport will be at home this weekend when they welcome No. 14 Oswego State for a big three game set.
