Spindler Stalls Laker Offense In Doubleheader Split

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Golden Eagle baseball team split their doubleheader with No. 14 Oswego Friday afternoon to move to 16-11 on the year (7-3 SUNYAC). The victory in game one marked their third win of the season over nationally ranked opponents, as they're now 3-2 against top-25 teams.

Game 1: W, 5-2
Austin Spindler got the start for Brockport in the opening contest, pitching an eight-inning gem to earn his third win of the season. The senior allowed just two runs on six hits, while striking out three Laker batters.

Brockport got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning, with Avery Brooks starting the rally with his one out single. Paul Ludden was up next and drew a walk before Matt Van Allen reached on an infield single to load the bases. Lou Miceli drove in the run when he hit a weak grounder to second and hustled down the line to beat out the double play, allowing Brooks to score.

Van Allen put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, working the count full before lining a two out double over the left fielders head that allowed Dane Cala to trot home from third.

The Lakers were able to string together some hits in the top of the third and plate a pair, knotting the game at 2-2. They were threatening for more with runners on first and second and nobody out, but Spindler was able to escape trouble, forcing three straight flyouts.

Brockport responded in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two of their own that knocked the Lakers starting pitcher out of the game. With Mike D'Eletto on second, coach Justin Beach put on the hit-and-run, and it paid off, as Brooks looped an RBI single to left center, regaining the lead for the Green and Gold. Miceli added to that lead later in the inning with his second RBI of the day, this time a sac fly to center that allowed Brooks to tag and score.

Cala gave the team another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a sac fly to center that was deep enough to allow Joe Bender to score.

Nick Jerolimov came in for the ninth, surrendering one hit before forcing a weak flyout to left that earned him his SUNYAC-leading fifth save of the year.

Game 2: L, 6-1
Mark Giallanzo got the start in game two, pitching the first 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run on eight hits.

After Oswego scored once in the second, both teams were held off the board until the top of the seventh when the Lakers scored five, all unearned and all with two outs in the inning. Brockport was able to push across one in the bottom half on a Mike D'Eletto RBI single, but Tim Cronin closed it out for Oswego, picking up his seventh win of the year.

Luke Gilbert led the Golden Eagles at the plate in this contest, going 2-for-3 and scoring the sole Brockport run. Mike D'Eletto also picked up a hit, boosting his batting average to a team-leading .410.

The series will be decided tomorrow at 1 p.m. when the teams face off in the rubber game of this three game set.
