ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Brockport baseball team fell to regional foe University of Rochester on Wednesday evening, dropping to 16-14 on the season. They still sit in third position in the SUNYAC conference at 7-4, with seven conference games remaining.
The Yellowjackets overwhelmed the Brockport pitching early in this contest, storming out to a 7-0 lead after five innings of play. Five Brockport pitchers split the work in the contest, allowing five earned runs on 13 hits.
Brockport was able to scratch across two runs in the bottom of the seventh, when a
Justin Valentino triple followed by two straight walks loaded the bases for
Tom Kretzler. The freshman hit a sac fly to right field that allowed Valentino to score and the speedy
AJ Sgroi to move to third, putting runners on the corners with one man out.
During the ensuing at-bat, the Golden Eagles pulled off the double steal, with
Dane Cala taking second and Sgroi scampering home on the throw down. A groundout allowed Cala to move to third with two men down, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Maddux Minton had the strongest outing on the mound for Brockport, allowing just one hit in his inning of work while striking out a Rochester batter.
Cala ended the day perfect at the plate, knocking two singles and adding two walks. Valentino also added two hits, and scored one of the Brockport runs after his leadoff triple.
The baseball team will have an off day tomorrow before traveling to Fredonia on Friday for a three game set with the Blue Devils. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
