FREDONIA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team used two late rallies to take both ends of the doubleheader against Fredonia on Saturday afternoon. The pair of wins improves the Green and Gold to 18-14 on the season, and 9-4 in the SUNYAC conference.
Game 1: W, 2-1
With the team trailing 1-0 heading to the top of the ninth inning, coach
Justin Beach made some moves to the bench that paid off.
Austin Hall got a pinch hit opportunity to lead off the inning, and came through with a base knock to get things rolling. He was pinch ran for by
Charlie Serino, who was moved over to second by a sacrifice bunt.
Joe Bender was up next, and tied the game up with his RBI single, putting the Golden Eagles on the board for the first time in the contest. Brockport was able to load the bases, threatening to take the lead, but a timely pickoff followed by a groundout ended the threat.
Fredonia put a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff double, but
Nick Jerolimov was able to put an end to the threat, retiring three of the next four hitters to send the game to extras.
With one away in the top of the tenth,
Paul Ludden came to the plate and smashed the eventual game-winning homer, his second of the season to give Brockport a 2-1 lead. Jerolimov faced the minimum in the bottom of the tenth after a timely double play ball, completing the comeback.
For the second straight outing,
Austin Spindler was lights out on the mound, this time going 8+ innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out five. The senior finished with a no-decision, but was the key to keeping a struggling Brockport offense in the game throughout.
Jerolimov picked up the win, his fourth of the season which ties him for a team-high. The Massapequa, N.Y. native allowed just one hit, and added a strikeout to his stat line.
Game 2: W, 5-3
Once again, Brockport found themselves trailing in this contest when Fredonia hopped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. This time however, the offense would not wait too long, matching the Blue Devils with a pair of their own in the top of the third.
Justin Valentino got the inning started off with a walk, and was moved over to second when
Tom Kretzler knocked a single. A sac bunt moved both runners over, bringing up
Mike D'Eletto who drove a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Valentino. Ludden was up next and kept his hot streak going, knocking a single that allowed Kretzler to score from third.
Brockport took the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the fourth, with Bender ripping a double in the gap to put himself in scoring position for
Dave Battel. After Bender hit a groundball back to the pitcher, Bender came all the way around to score the go ahead run on a pair of Fredonia errors, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-2 lead.
Fredonia was able to knot things up again with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Brockport bats were up to the challenge yet again. After a one out double from Valentino, Kretzler came up to the plate and ripped a go-ahead two run shot, the first of the freshman's collegiate career. The homer put Brockport up 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
A leadoff single was all Fredonia was able to muster, as D'Eletto sent the next three hitters down to complete the doubleheader sweep for Brockport. D'Eletto earned his first win of the season after pitching the final two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out a pair.
Mark Giallanzo and
Jason Hellwig combined to pitch the first five innings, allowing just three runs (one earned) on five hits. Giallanzo also struck out six batters in just 3.2 innings of work.
Brockport will look to complete the sweep tomorrow afternoon when they square off with Fredonia for game three beginning at noon.
