Golden Eagles Hold Off Blue Devils Late Rally To Earn Split

FREDONIA, N.Y.- The College at Brockport softball team worked to earn a split against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rivals Fredonia State on Saturday. The Golden Eagles fell in the first game 4-2, and were able to hold off a late Blue Devil rally in the second contest, earning a 7-6 victory.

With the split the Golden Eagles are now 14-14 on the season and 4-8 in SUNYAC play. Fredonia moves to 11-18 on the season and 2-10 in league action.

Game One:

Brockport had a strong start on offense, loading the bases in the first two innings to open play. The Green and Gold were unable to push across any runs stranding six runners on base. In the top of the third inning, the Golden Eagles were able to get on the board with two outs, when Kathleen Laskey singled, scoring Lindsay Wachna from second base.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom half of the fifth inning when the Blue Devils took a 2-1 advantage on a two run home run. Fredonia tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 4-1.

With two outs in the seventh inning Casey Danko cut the lead in half connecting on her second home run of the season. The Golden Eagles comeback bid fell short, as the Blue Devils were able to get the next batter to ground out to earn their second conference win of the season.

With the loss, Amanda Colon falls to 4-5 in the circle this season. The junior pitched a complete game allowing only two earned runs and recording one strike out.

Danko went 2-for-4 from the plate and drove in one run for the Golden Eagles. Laskey drove in the other Green and Gold run and went 1-for-2 from the plate.

Game Two:

In the night cap, Brockport was able to score seven runs, while pounding out 15 hits for the game.  The Golden Eagles manufactured a run with two outs to open up the game. With two outs and nobody on, Jessica Koneski drew a walk, which was followed by a single by Wachna and an RBI single by Karleigh Eaton, giving Brockport a 1-0 lead.

Brockport struck for three more runs in the second. Danko delivered the big blow, ripping a two run RBI double to right center field, brining home Alison Missavage and Morgan Flamholtz. One batter later Meghan Cullen drove home Danko with a single giving Brockport a 4-2 lead.

The Golden Eagles tacked on three more runs in the third inning, with Laskey delivering again, with a 2 run RBI double, scoring Shelby Perry and Flamholtz. Laskey came around to score on an error by the Fredonia shortstop off the bat of Danko.

Fredonia was able to fight back into the game scoring one in the third and two in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-5. The Blue Devils scored one in the bottom of the seventh inning, but left the tying run stranded on first base.

Becky Knorr was able to close the door on Fredonia pitching the last 2.2 innings, recording five strikeouts and earning her first save of the season. Michaela Contreras picked up her fifth win of the year, pitching 4.1 innings allowing eight hits and striking out one.

Flamholtz went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate and scored two runs for the Golden Eagles. Wachna, Missavage and Cullen chipped in with two hits apiece.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, April 23 traveling to Buffalo State for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
