Fourth Quarter Comeback Propels Brockport Past Geneseo, 7-6

GENESEO, N.Y. – In a close contest, The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team fought back and picked up the big State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win on Wednesday over SUNY Geneseo, 7-6.

The Golden Eagles improve to 7-5 on the year and 3-2 in the SUNYAC while the Knights fall to 8-5 in 2017 and 2-3 in league play.

The Green and Gold had to overcome a 5-2 deficit heading into the final frame, but used an electric five-goal fourth quarter to overcome the Knights.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Golden Eagles netted a pair of scores in the second quarter, with goals from Jake Giudice and Brendan Fitzgerald, trailing 3-2 heading into the second half. In the third period the Golden Eagle offense was kept quiet, as Geneseo notched a pair to push their lead to 5-2 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, head coach Ben Wineburg's squad meant business, netting five unanswered goals. Robinson found the back of the cage in the opening minute for his second goal of the contest, while Joe Mikiciuk, and Michael Caternolo added scores in the 13th minute to erase the Green and Gold deficit.

Giudice notched the go-ahead goal, and Fitzgerald picked up the insurance goal, lifting the Golden Eagles 7-5 with 9:05 to play. The Green and Gold defense stepped up, fighting to hold off the Knights. Brockport saw Geneseo add a goal with three minutes to play, but fought to hold the Knights at bay and secure the 7-6 win.

It was a close battle through and through, with Brockport taking the edge in shots 28-27, shots on goal 19-13, and ground balls 28-20. The Golden Eagles dominated the face off circle, with Caternolo going 11-for 13 and Zach Cook finishing 2-for-3 on the day.

On the defensive side, the Green and Gold were led by Mikiciuk who accounted for two caused turnovers, while five other Golden Eagles had a CT. Pat Quinlivan picked up six ground balls with Cook adding four GB's.

Dallas Meyers picked up the start and the win in all 60 minutes of action while making seven saves on 27 shots faced.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on April 29 at 1 p.m. when they host Oswego State in their regular season finale. The contest will serve as senior day, with the Green and Gold honoring their nine senior members in a ceremony held prior to opening draw.
