Perry's Walkoff Home run Lifts Brockport In Sweep of No.17 Cortland

BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The College at Brockport softball team upset No.17 SUNY Cortland twice on Friday to earn a sweep in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action. The Golden Eagles won in walk off fashion in game one, with a home run by Shelby Perry, for the 4-3 win. In the night cap the Brockport held off a late Cortland Surge to win 8-7.

With the sweep Brockport is now 18-18 on the year and 7-9 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons fall to 24-10 and 13-3 in league action.

Game One
Brockport scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Jessica Koneski drove in the first run of the game on an RBI single through the right side, scoring Meghan Cullen. Karleigh Eaton knocked a single down the left field line allowing Lindsay Wachna to score from second base. Koneski came around to score on a single by Alison Missavage to complete the three-run first.

Brockport saw the Red Dragons tie the contest, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of two Golden Eagle errors. In the seventh inning Becky Knorr was able to strand the go ahead run on third base, which set the stage for Perry.

With nobody on and one out in the bottom half of the seventh Perry pinch hit and connected on the second pitch she saw wrapping the ball around the left field foul pole for her first home run of the season.

Knorr pitched a complete game scattering seven hits, while only allowing two earned runs and striking out four Cortland hitters. The junior now improves to 5-4 on the season in the circle for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport recorded six hits in the contest with four separate Golden Eagles driving in runs in game one.

Game Two:

Brockport opened up game two just the way they ended the first contest, as Meghan Cullen led off the bottom of the first inning with a monster home run off the score board in left field, giving the Golden Eagle an early 1-0 lead.

The Green and Gold tacked on four more runs in the third inning, highlighted by a three-run bomb to right center field by Wacha, putting the Golden Eagles up 6-0. Cortland answered with two runs in the third fame to cut the Green and Gold lead to 6-2.

Brockport added two more insurance runs in the fourth. Cullen walked to open the frame and later stole home to give the Golden Eagles a 7-2 lead. Missavage connected on an RBI single that scored Wachna who singled earlier in the frame.

The Red Dragons rallied for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Brockport lead to 8-7. Knorr came in and shut the door standing two Cortland runners on base in the last two frames and picking up her second save of the season.

Michaela Contreras improves to 6-2 in the circle this season. The freshman pitch 4.2 innings and was able to work out of trouble scattering six Red Dragon hits.

Wachna went 2-for-4 in the series finale, driving in three runs, scoring twice and hitting a home run. Cullen also posted a two-hit night, scoring three runs and recording a home run in the victory.

Brockport will return home tomorrow for their last double header of the season. The Golden Eagles host Oswego State and the game will serve as senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
