Brockport posts strong season finale win over New Paltz, 20-2

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 4/19 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday, downing State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foes SUNY New Paltz 20-2.

The Golden Eagles improve to 14-1 in 2017 and finish SUNYAC play with an undefeated record of 8-0 while the Hawks fall to 5-9 on the year and 1-7 in league action.

Brockport suffered a sluggish start, seeing New Paltz net a pair of goals to start the contest. The Green and Gold offense caught fire, netting nine straight scores to close the half. Jessica Boddery connected with Kelly Wall to open the scoring, with Wall burying her own goal off a Nikki Nolan set up to erase their deficit.

Hannah Cullen buried a Boddery set up, while Heather Conklin worked in a goal at the 14:12 mark to push their lead to 4-2. The Golden Eagles continued to lay into the Hawks, with Cullen adding a second score and Andrea Zlinsky working into the scoring column. Wall, Conklin and Zlinsky each added scores to close the half, taking a 9-2 lead into the break.

In the second frame, it was all Golden Eagles with 11 unanswered scores for the Green and Gold. In the opening 10 minutes of action Conklin and Taylor Thomas each scored a pair, with Cullen adding a goal to push to the 14-2 lead. Wall added her third goal of the day while Nolan found the back of the cage for her first score of the year at the 17-minute mark. Chloe Kurst buried a Nicole Geoghan pass to push Brockport to a 17-2 edge

In the final five minutes of play, the Golden Eagles added three insurance goals, with Miah Rowland scoring a pair, and Briana Davies putting away a Kurst pass in the final 13 seconds of play to secure the 20-2 win.

Brockport dominated their opponents on all accounts, taking the shots category (30-8), shots on goal (26-8), draw controls (18-5) and free position shots (17-3). The Green and Gold went 10-for-10 on clears for the day, while forcing 18 New Paltz turnovers and holding their clears to 8-for-18.

With the onslaught of offense, the Brockport defense also stepped up big on the day. Katie Curran led the way with an impressive five caused turnovers and four ground balls while adding four draw control wins. Lauren Mancini and Cassandra Minerd added a pair of CT's and ground balls each, with Minerd picking up two draws.

The Golden Eagles will set their sights on the 2017 SUNYAC Tournament, as the Green and Gold earned hosting rights for the first time in program history as the No. 1 seed. Brockport will await their opponent, the winners of the No. 4/5 matchup, which will take place at the higher seed on May 2. The Golden Eagles will host the SUNYAC Tournament on May 4-5, with the semi-final round games slated for 12:30 and 4 p.m. on May 4 at Bob Boozer Field on the campus of Brockport.
