BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Golden Eagle baseball team opened their home schedule with a 7-3 win over Ithaca College to move to 14-8 on the season.
Jason Hellwig picked up the win for the Golden Eagles, moving to 2-1 on the season.
Brockport took no time to get their offense rolling, loading the bases in the bottom of the first after a leadoff walk from
Dane Cala, and back-to-back singles from
Tom Kretzler and
Paul Ludden.
Matt Van Allen knocked in Cala with a single of his own, putting Brockport on the board.
The Bombers were able to limit the damage in the inning, forcing a double play off the bat of
Avery Brooks that scored
Tom Kretzler. A groundout to third in the ensuing at-bat ended the inning, giving Brockport a 2-0 lead.
After Ithaca scored one of their own in the top of the second, the offense went back to work, notching four more in the bottom half.
Joe Bender got things started with a line drive single to left field, and was moved over to second when
Drew DeBlasiis laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base on a throwing error by the catcher.
Both runners were moved over when
Justin LaRosa laid down a SAC bunt, putting two in scoring position for Cala, who came through with an RBI single to left that scored Bender. Kretzler slapped his second hit of the game in the next at-bat, plating DeBlasiis and putting two on with one out for Ludden.
On a hit-and-run play, Ludden smashed one of his four hits of the day, a line drive single to left that scored Cala from second and allowed Kretzler to advance. Van Allen followed him up with a single to left center, driving in two more to complete the four-run inning.
The offense cooled down a bit after that point, scoring only once more in the fourth off an RBI single by Ludden, who ended the day 4-for-4 at the plate. The seven runs would be more than enough however, as the duo of Hellwig and
Ryan Greco were lights out on the mound.
Hellwig hurled the first 5.1 innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits on his way to the win. Greco came in to finish the sixth, and was absolutely dominant, allowing just one hit in 3.2 innings and striking out six Bomber hitters. His performance earned him the save, his first of the season.
Brockport will host more action at 4 p.m. on Friday when they welcome another regional opponent in St. John Fisher.
