CLINTON, N.Y. – The College at Brockport baseball team split their double-header with Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon, moving to 15-9 on the season.
Ben Moxley picked up the win in the second game for the Green and Gold, his second straight winning start.
Game 1: L, 16-1
After Brockport scored the first run of the contest, the Hamilton offense exploded for a season-high sixteen runs between the third and fifth inning.
Austin Spindler took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs in his time on the mound.
Brendan Heywood was a bright spot for the Brockport pitching staff, sending the Continental hitters down 1-2-3.
Brockport's run came in the top of the second, when the Golden Eagles found themselves with runners on the corners and two men out. With
Dane Cala at the plate,
Mike D'Eletto took off to steal second, but paused halfway down the line to draw the throw. He then got into a rundown that allowed
Austin Hall to take off from third base and score, successfully executing the double steal.
Avery Brooks and D'Eletto were the bright spots in the Brockport lineup in this contest, combining to go 4-for-5 at the plate.
Game 2: W, 7-4:
The Hamilton offense picked up where they left off in game one, notching four runs in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead. Brockport showed tremendous resiliency however, rallying to score the next seven runs and salvage the series with a win.
The scoring started in the top of the fifth when
Lou Miceli found himself at the dish with the bases loaded and two men out. The sophomore came through, blasting a bases clearing double to right field that got Brockport back in the game, pulling them to within one.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Dane Cala tied it up when he drove a single into the second base hole that scored
Dave Battel and allowed
Justin Valentino to advance to third. They pulled ahead after the next at-bat when Brooks hit a sac-fly to center to drive in Valentino.
They weren't done there however, as
Anthony Eaton gave the Golden Eagles some insurance when he ripped a two-RBI triple with two outs that scored Cala and
Paul Ludden.
Moxley got the first out in the bottom of the sixth, and was then relieved by
Mark Giallanzo who shut the door on the Hamilton scoring threat.
Seve Kowalski came in for the bottom of the seventh, picking up his first save of the season. The senior faced the minimum after forcing a 6-4-3 double play that ended the game.
Baseball will be on the road Tuesday and Wednesday, when they travel into Rochester for games against RIT and St. John Fisher. Both games are set to begin at 4 p.m.
