BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 4/16 College at Brockport women's lacrosse team was upended in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship on a soggy Saturday, falling to No. 13/19 SUNY Cortland, 12-7.
The Golden Eagles move to 15-2 on the year while the Red Dragons improve to 14-4.
After what opened as a stalemate with neither team able to find the back of the cage for the opening six minutes, Brockport saw their opponents net four straight to face the early deficit.
Tess Knight took advantage of a man-up opportunity, burying a
Kelly Wall assist to put the Golden Eagles on the board at the 21-minute mark.
After a fifth Cortland goal, the Green and Gold found the back of the cage two more times to close the half, with
Hannah Cullen and
Andrea Zlinsky working in scores to cut their deficit to 5-3 heading into the break.
In the second half the Golden Eagles traded scores with their opponent, with Cullen and
Heather Conklin providing answers at the 22 and 15 minute marks, making the count 7-5. A three-goal Cortland streak stalled the Green and Gold comeback efforts, as Brockport faced a 10-5 deficit with 12 minutes remaining.
Brockport worked in a pair of goals, with Cullen and Conklin connecting again, but Cortland added two scores of their own to hand Brockport the 12-7 loss.
The Golden Eagles had the edge in several statistical categories, taking the shots (42-25), shots on goal (25-18), ground balls (20-17) and free position shots (11-6). The Green and Gold defense forced 18 Cortland turnovers while going 14-for-15 on clears.
Lauren Mancini led the defense, accounting for four caused turnovers and picking up three ground balls.
Cassandra Minerd added three CT's, two ground balls and two draw controls.
Sara Shaddock picked up all 60 minutes of play in her first loss of the season while making six saves.
Brockport placed four on the SUNYAC All-Tournament team, with Knight, Conklin, Minerd and Wall all named to the 2017 team.
