Brockport Split in First Day at Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The College at Brockport volleyball team split their games in the first day at the Union College Invitational. The Golden Eagles won their first game 3-1 against Skidmore College before falling to Stevens Institute of Technology 3-0. Brockport moves to 3-4 on the season. 

Game One vs Skidmore College: W, 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-18)

In the first match of the day, the Golden Eagles found themselves trailing early by a score of 6-3. The Green and Gold then strung together two consecutive four point rallies to take an 11-7 advantage, before closing out the first set by collecting the last 11 of the 15 points scored to grab a 25-14 win. 

Skidmore jumped out to a large 9-1 lead to start the second set of the match. After a few rallies throughout the game, the Green and Gold found themselves trailing by a score of 19-17. With a Lindsey Luce kill and two aces from Rachel Fiser, Brockport took their first lead of the match at 20-19. Both teams traded points to reach 25-25. The Thoroughbreds notched the next two to win the second set 27-25.

Brockport got back to pace in the third set as they kept the game close halfway through the game. Skidmore put together a three-point rally taking a 18-16 advantage over the Green and Gold, but the Golden Eagles answered with their own three-point run to take a 19-18 lead with kills coming from Rachel Millington, Laiken Fox, and Kelly Waters. Brockport held onto their lead as they took the third set 25-21. 

The Golden Eagles closed out the fourth set posting a 25-18 win. Brockport was down midway through the game, but took a 11-10 lead after a five-point rally. They never looked back, closing the match out with a 3-1 victory over Skidmore. 

Fox helped pace the offense, registering 12 kills, and Brianna Richardson who also finished 12 kills had a .476 hitting percentage. Noelle Poloncarz and Fiser handed out 28 assists apiece and combined for four aces. Maddy Taylor finished the match with 16 digs, while Aimee Spillman added 15. 

Game Two vs Stevens Institute of Technology L, 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 19-25) 

In the second match of the night, Brockport lost in straight sets to Stevens Institute of Technology. The Ducks came out strong as they rallied early, and continued that momentum midway through the first set to build a stable lead of 14-7. The Golden Eagles fought back to make the game close late, but their efforts were not enough as Stevens took the first set 25-19. 

Brockport jumped out to an early lead in the second set, starting off with a four-point rally to post a 5-2 lead. The Ducks matched their run to gain a lead of their own, and both teams continued to trade points until midway through the set. Stevens went on a six-point rally to take a 21-16 lead which they would not surrender, winning by a final score of 25-19.

Brockport lost in the final set by a score of 25-19. The Golden Eagles were tied with Stevens 12-12 before the Ducks put together multiple scoring streaks to help lift them to the set and match victory.

Richardson lead the Green and Gold offensively finishing with nine kills. Poloncarz helped pace the offense by adding 15 assists, and Taylor lead the team defensively with 11 digs. 

Brockport will be back in action tomorrow as they wrap up their showing at the Union College Invitational, squaring off against Union College at 11 a.m. and Middlebury College at 3 p.m.
