Sharp Shooting From Laux Lifts Brockport Over Fredonia

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team got back to their winning ways on Friday afternoon, defeating SUNY Fredonia by a final score of 60-55. The win lifts the Golden Eagles to 4-9 on the season (2-5 SUNYAC), while the Blue Devils drop to 6-9 (4-4).

Brockport controlled the game from the jump, as Emily Nestler, who recorded a double-double in the contest, got it started early with a jumper in the paint. She went on to score seven points in the quarter, helping give the Golden Eagles a 19-12 lead.

They extended that lead early in the second quarter when Schyler Laux buried her first of three second quarter long balls a minute into the quarter. Laux ended the game with 25 points on 7-11 from three, and four of four from the line. The junior is now a perfect 28-for-28 from the charity stripe this season.

They kept up their hot shooting for the remainder of the quarter, carrying a 13-point lead into the break. With less than ten seconds left in the half, Bailey Pratt took an inbounds pass and raced down the court before dishing the ball off to Laux who nailed the three ball that took the teams into the break.

After Brockport extended their lead to as many as 18 points early in the third quarter, the Blue Devils went on a 13-0 run that cut the deficit to five. They continued cutting into the lead early in the fourth, even tying the game at 45-45 with 6:51 to play, but the Golden Eagles hung tough, and after back to back jumpers from Julianna Taylor and Zaria McCullough, regained a lead that they would never relinquish.

Laux scored 10 of the last 11 points for the Green and Gold, icing the game with her terrific shooting.

McCullough finished the game with seven assists to go with her four points and four boards, while Taylor dished out three assists and scored four points as well. Brianna Neeley played some stingy defense down the stretch, shutting down Fredonia's low-post scorers while grabbing five boards and two steals. Lindsay Johnson was key on the glass, snagging nine boards which was second only to Nestler.

Brockport will look to stay hot tomorrow evening when they travel to Buffalo State for a rematch of Tuesday's thrilling fourth quarter loss.
