BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport women's volleyball team had their season come to a disappointing end as they lost in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) quarterfinals to Oswego State, 3-2. The Golden Eagles finish the year with a 19-12 overall record and 7-2 in conference play.
The first set got off to a rough start for the Green and Gold as they fell behind 4-2, but quickly worked their way back to even things up at 5-5 before a three point run helped them nab an 8-6 advantage. The Lakers proved to be a persistent bunch as they were never out of it. Kills by
Lindsey Luce,
Cassie Birth and a service ace by
Maddy Taylor put the unit ahead by one or two points until four straight points sealed the end of the set, 25-21 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
After dropping the second frame, 25-23, Brockport seemed to flip a switch in the third set, quickly jumping out to a 5-1 advantage using kills by
Lauren Hess, Luce and another service ace by Taylor. The Green and Gold continued to dominate, grabbing a double digit lead using a 7-1 run thanks to contributions from Luce, Hess and Birth. The set finished with seven consecutive points scored for the Golden Eagles, including a service ace by
Abbey Manning to ice the frame and push the team ahead 2-1.
The fourth set was a tremendous demonstration of the grit and resilience that Brockport has displayed all year. The unit started off down 9-1 before beginning to chip away. Back-to-back kills by Birth and
Meaghan Mastro cut the deficit to six before a kill be Luce and oppositional error brought the score to 12-8 in favor of the Lakers. Three consecutive points by Luce had Brockport only down two, 13-11, before a 4-0 run not only tied the set, but gave the Green and Gold their first lead of the frame at 18-17. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the comeback and fell 26-24, before dropping the fifth and final set 15-9.
The final game of the season saw some impressive performances for Brockport. Luce ended the match with 16 kills, while Mastro and Birth each contributed 15 of their own.
Kerri McHale recorded 56 assists, which is the highest total for a Golden Eagle since 2015. Taylor was dynamic on defense, marking a career high 48 digs. The total is the second most in Brockport history for digs in a match. In addition, Taylor moved to third in Green and Gold history for most digs in a career with 1,559.
Brockport will head into next season with a host of returning talent including their top two leaders in kills, Luce and Laiken, their assist leader in McHale and two of their best blockers in Hess and Mastro. First year contributors,
Alexi Hamilton and
Shelby Budnick will aim to make a leap heading into their first collegiate off-season.
