BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team held off a talented Medaille unit on Friday, earning the victory by a score of 98-91. The Golden Eagles now sit at 1-0, while the Mavericks hold a 0-1 record after game one.
The Green and Gold got off to a scorching start, after a
Tyler Collins layup was followed up by back-to-back makes from behind the arc by
Josh Nelson and
Justin Summers to bring the score to 8-0. Medaille chipped their way back to a three-point deficit, but Brockport extended their lead to double digits on two three-pointers by Collins and a dunk by Summers gave the unit a 24-12 advantage. The Golden Eagles had their lead threatened at the 05:33 mark when the Mavericks cut the deficit to two, but
Montgomery Stroman hit a crucial three, followed by a fast break trey by Collins, capitalizing on a
Dwayne Daniel steal. From that point on, the Green and Gold didn't let the lead drop to below six and used clutch buckets by
Xavier Merriweather and
Davonte Jones to go into half-time up 60-47.
Nelson opened up the second frame with a three-pointer to give the team their biggest lead of 16 in the opening minute. The team constantly put pressure on the Mavericks with layups by
Devante Hagins and
Danny Ashley bringing the advantage to 16 on multiple occasions, but the opposition was persistent and cut the deficit to single-digits with 09:02 left to play. Medaille used an 8-0 run to bring the score to 86-82 in favor of Brockport, the smallest deficit since the 05:33 mark of the first half. However, in the final 02:36 of the game, the Green and Gold knocked down 8-of-9 from the free-throw line including an and-one by Ashley, to ice the game and win 98-91.
Collins was the star, scoring 31 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the field and 5-for-6 from behind the arc. The senior added seven assists and grabbed five rebounds, while swatting away two balls and recording five steals. Both Nelson and Summers chipped in 13 points apiece and combined for nine rebounds and three assists. Summers battled foul trouble for most of the game but was still a defense force, blocking three shots. Jones and Ashley contributed valuable minutes off the bench, scoring 18 points between the two.
Brockport is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when they host the Morrisville State Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. following the women's basketball game.
