Brockport Earns First Win of the Season in Dominating Fashion

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.—The College at Brockport baseball team kicked off their weekend in Virginia Beach with an impressive 16-2 win over Alfred State College. The win moves the Golden Eagles to 1-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.

The Green and Gold got the offense rolling in the first inning with Avery Brooks taking advantage of an error by the opposition to reach first base. Brooks then stole second before a Lou Miceli walk and Tom Kretzler hit by pitch loaded the bases. Luke Gilbert drove in the first run of the game, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to score Brooks. Anthony Eaton cleared the bases with a line drive double and gave Brockport a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles scored another three runs in the third inning thanks to a solo homerun by Kretzler and a two-run homerun by Liam O'Leary to drive the lead to 6-0. A seventh run was scored in the fourth inning off of the bat of Nicholas Pastore.

Brockport continued to swing a hot bat in the fifth inning starting with a Kretzler single through the left side of the infield. Eaton reached on an error and O'Leary worked a walk to load the bases with one out yet again. Nik Malachowski recorded an RBI after a single down the right field line scored Kretzler. Pastore continued his impressive day earning two more RBIs after singling up the middle and increasing the Brockport advantage to 10-0.

The offense picked up once again in the seventh starting with a double by Charlie Serino through the left side. Pastore worked a walk, and then both used a double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. Justin LaRosa came to the plate and singled up the middle and scored Serino. Miceli grounded out next but he did his job a scored Pastore. Following a walk by Josh Cosgrove and single by Jack Wallwork, O'Leary worked a walk to score LaRosa. Malachowski provided a three RBI double that cleared the bases and made the score 16-1.

Starting pitcher Jason Hellwig made quick work in the bottom of the first, forcing a ground-ball double play before striking out the third batter. Hellwig continued to pitch well in the second and third innings, striking out four batters and stranding three on base. Through five innings of work, Hellwig struck out seven, walked one and allowed one run on four hits to earn his first win of the year.

Trevor McCarthy was the first name called out of the bull-pen and worked out of trouble, stranding three batters on base and striking out one. Brendan Heywood stepped onto the pitching mound in the seventh and recorded two strikeouts, while allowing one run on two hits.
