Game Recap: Baseball |

Brockport Split Double Header Against Suffolk University

AUBURNDALE, FLA—The College at Brockport baseball team played impressively for a majority of the day and split the two games against a good Suffolk University unit. The Green and Gold dropped the first game 5-3 in extra innings but came back with a vengeance in game two with a 16-4 victory. After the pair of contests, the Golden Eagles sit at 4-4 on the year as the Rams fall to 2-2 on the season.

Game 1: Loss 5-3
Brockport fell behind quickly, with the Rams hitting a leadoff home run to claim the lead 1-0. The team showed once again that they do not go down easily. In the fourth inning, Avery Brooks hit a single to center field that was followed by a double by Tom Kretzler. Anthony Eaton put them on the board with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Brooks.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Brockport had the last chance to tie the game being down 3-2. Charlie Serino singled and got to third on a bunt by Luke Gilbert and passed ball. Kretzler and Eaton showed their patience and worked back-to-back walks to load the bases with two outs. The good eye at the plate rubbed off on Josh Cosgrove, as he worked a walk to score the tying run. The Green and Gold were unable to score another run and fell 5-3.

Sam McCumiskey got the start and threw 5.2 innings, allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out eight batters. Noah Dilbone received the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit.

Game 2: Win 16-4
The second game turned into a battle of the bullpens, and Brockport showed the depth they had. In the first inning, both teams combined for seven runs on eight hits, with neither pitcher able to get out of the first inning. Heading into the second inning, the Green and Gold were down 4-3, but that did not last long.

With two outs, Kretzler tripled to right center and tied the game at four after a ball got passed the catcher. Casey Piazza came in for relief in the first inning, retired seven of the eight batters he faced going into the fourth and it allowed for his team to blow the game open. Drew DeBlasiis started the fourth inning with a bunt single and was then moved to second after a sacrifice bunt by Serino. Nicholas Pastore recorded a base knock of his own that was enough to score the hard running DeBlasiis from second to take the lead.

After Pastore stole second, back-to-back base hits by Austin Hall, and Kretzler scored another run to make it 6-4. Following a hit by pitch by Eaton, a Liam O'Leary single up the middle scored two more and brought the lead to 8-4. Malachowski later added to the lead with yet another single that scored Eaton and forced a pitching change, but Brockport simply turned up the heat. DeBlasiis once again registered a hit this time with an RBI at the end of it. Serino knocked in a run of his own and a Pastore walk loaded the bases. Hall cleared the basis and brought the lead to 14-4.

Piazza earned the win after taking control of the game in the first, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. Trevor McCarthy, Brendan Heywood and Jimmy Lovelass each tossed 1.0 inning of no-hit baseball to close out the game.

The Golden Eagles return to the field tomorrow, March 12 when they face off against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at 4:30 p.m. on Lake Myrtle Field No. 8.
