Brockport Stumbles in Battle Against Wisconsin-La Crosse

AUBURNDALE, FLA—The College at Brockport faced off against the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Monday at the Chain of Lakes Complex and lost a gritty game 9-7. The Golden Eagles move to 4-5 on the year, while La Crosse now sits at 3-1 on the season.

The Green and Gold got the scoring started in the first inning with Nicholas Pastore getting hit by a pinch and then moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Hall. After moving over to third, Pastore scored on a passed ball to give his team a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived, but as they have done so often, Brockport made a comeback.

The Golden Eagles went into the top of the fourth inning down 5-1, but State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Baseball Athlete of the Week, Tom Kretzler, got things started with a walk before Anthony Eaton hit a single to right field to put two runners on. Liam O'Leary hit a ball that just got by the short stop and loaded the bases. Lou Miceli hit a single of his own through the left side and Kretzler was able to score and cut the deficit to three. Drew DeBlasiis hit a sacrifice fly to left and the score was now 5-3. Justin Valentino drove in the third run of the inning with a base hit and a couple of batters later, Pastore tripled to right field and gave Brockport a 6-5 lead.

The Green and Gold added to the lead in the fifth inning after Kretzler double to left field and then advanced on a passed ball. O'Leary reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Kretzler to come home and increase the advantage 7-5. Brockport was unable to hold onto the lead and fell, 9-7.

Alex Brown took the start on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings, allowed four earned runs on seven hits and struck out five. Miceli and DeBlasiis both led the way offensively, each hitting 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The Golden Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, March 12 at 5 p.m. when the faceoff against Ramapo College.
