Softball Drops Monday Doubleheader

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The College at Brockport softball team dropped a pair of games against Wilmington College and Kenyon College Monday afternoon to fall to 3-5 on the year. They're now more than halfway through the 2018 spring trip, with six games still to play.

Game 1 vs. Wilmington: Loss, 9-8
Wilmington took control of today's opener early on, scoring six runs in the first six innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Golden Eagle offense got rolling in the top of the fifth inning however, when Alex Ross, Meghan Cullen, and Casey Danko led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Jessica Koneski was the next batter up, and after working an eight pitch at-bat, drove a line drive home run over the left field fence for her second grand slam in three days. Brockport has found a knack for hitting clutch home runs of late, as they've hit three grand slams in three days.

Wilmington got one back in the bottom half of the frame, extending their lead to 7-4 which would hold until the final half inning for Brockport. The Green and Gold mounted an outstanding comeback, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh off another home run from Koneski and RBI hits from Karleigh Eaton and Alexis Ross, taking their first lead of the game.

Unfortunately, the lead would not hold as clutch hitting from Wilmington allowed them to walk off with the win, taking game one 9-8.

Koneski went 4-for-4 from the plate with five RBI and two runs score, and is now hitting at a .552 clip in the eight games this season. Ross and Cullen also had good games offensively, each collecting two hits and scoring a run.

Game 2 vs. Kenyon: Loss, 6-0
For the second straight day, freshma Julia Palopoli pitched an outstanding game, allowing just two runs through her first five innings in the circle. Overall, she allowed only six hits in her 5.2 innings of work, as the Golden Eagles outhit Kenyon 8-7 in the game.

Unfortunately for the offense, they were unable to string their hits together, being shut out for the first time this season. They nearly scored a run in the top of the fourth when Morgan Flamholtz crossed the plate on a successful double steal, but was called out due to batter's interference.

Flamholtz was one of seven Brockport players to record a hit in the game, led by Cullen who matched her game one total with two more hits.

Kenyon extended their two run lead to six in the bottom of the sixth when a bases clearing triple extended the gap to an insurmountable amount. A bunt single drove in the final run a batter later, as Kenyon was able to hang on for the 6-0 lead.

Brockport will look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow when they face Southern Vermont and Newbury College for games beginning at 9 a.m.
