FORT MYERS, Fla. – The College at Brockport softball team bounced back on Tuesday afternoon, picking up a pair of wins to move to 5-5 on the season. They first defeated Southern Vermont College in a 16-2 mercy rule game before defeating Newbury College 11-5 to complete the days sweep.
Game 1 vs. Southern Vermont: Win, 16-2
The offense got going right away today, as the Golden Eagles came out of the gates hot with eight runs in the top of the first inning. All thirteen of the runs came one at a time, as the Golden Eagles collected six hits, drew two walks, and used two SVC errors to take a commanding lead. Brockport was able to hit around in the inning, with every Golden Eagle player either getting on base or driving in a run in the frame.
After
Amanda Colon shut Southern Vermont down in the bottom half of the inning, the offensive unit got right back to it, scoring another six runs on seven hits to take a 14-0 second inning lead and all but put the game away. Six different Brockport hitters drove in runs in the inning, all coming on base hits.
Brockport's commanding lead allowed them to give their usual starting lineup a break, and give the pitching staff a chance at the plate. Four different pitchers saw plate appearances for the Golden Eagles, combining to go 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Becky Knorr nearly made the dugout erupt when she drove a ball deep down the left field line, but narrowly missed a homerun when the ball tailed just foul.
Alexis Ross led the team with four hits, driving in a pair of runs and scoring two more.
Meghan Cullen drove in three after going three-for-three from the plate, while
Casey Danko and
Penny Lenard each drove in two apiece as well.
Colon picked up her first win of the season after allowing two runs in three innings of work. The senior gave up just four hits during her outing while striking out three.
Maggie Dorgan also got some work in the opener today, pitching the final two innings for Brockport without allowing a run.
Game 2 vs. Newbury: Win, 11-5
The Golden Eagles once again led throughout in the second game of their double-header, using six runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead that they would never relinquish. That offense combined with solid outings from
Leah Graham and Knorr gave them their second win of the day, bringing the squad back to .500 on the season.
Alison Missavage had a great game at the plate, going four-for-four while driving in three runs. She got started right away, lining a single up the middle in the bottom of the first to give Brockport their first run of the game.
Missavage was in the center of the five run second inning for Brockport as well, scoring Danko from third on her double to right center.
Karleigh Eaton, Ross, and
Jessica Koneski all drove in runs in the frame as well, putting the Green and Gold up 6-0 after two.
Newbury did not go away quietly, scoring two runs in the fourth and three in the top of the fifth to close the Brockport lead to 6-5. It was not enough to match the explosive Golden Eagle offense however, as the team scored five more runs in the next two innings, four of which were driven in by Koneski, to extend their lead once again to 11-5.
Knorr shut the Night Hawks down in the final two innings of play, finishing her day with three runs allowed in three innings of work. Graham moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just two runs in her four innings, striking out a Newbury batter in the process.
The Green and Gold will look to keep with their winning ways tomorrow when they face Crown College at 9 a.m. and SUNY Canton at 11 a.m.
