BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team froze Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, winning by a final score of 18-8. The Golden Eagles move to 4-7 (4-1 SUNYAC) in 2018, where the Bengals drop to 7-7 (3-2 SUNYAC).
Brockport started hot as they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over Buffalo State through the first six minutes of play.
Sara Grapevine started the scoring for the Green and Gold, to then have
Heather Conklin cash-in 27 seconds later to have a 2-0 lead.
Taylor Thomas was the next to score for the Golden Eagles as wrapped around the back side of the net and beat goalie on her shot.
Jade Williams answered her less than 30 seconds later on a free position shot to pull away 4-0. Conklin and
Dana Kiselica finished off the six-goal-run as they each put one in the back of the net, to have a demanding lead over the Bengals. Brockport stayed hot in the snowy weather as they tacked on four more goals, while allowing four to post a 10-4 lead going into halftime.
The Golden Eagles got off to a shaky start in the second half as Buffalo State was the first team to strike to cut the deficit to 10-5. Williams answered for Brockport to make it 11-5, when she received a pass from Thomas to beat the visiting goalie on her shot. Both teams battled back-and-forth as they traded two goals each to set the score at 13-7. After the snow settled, the Green and Gold picked up the pace to score five straight goals to ice the victory over Buffalo State. After a caused turnover by
Andrea Zlinsky, she scooped up the ball and hit
Hannah Cullen in front of the net to slot her shot past the goalie. Zlinsky got in on the action next as she rifled her shot top corner to extend the lead to 15-7. Conklin, Williams, and Kiselica scored the next three goals to round out the run, to post a commanding 18-7 advantage. Buffalo State tacked on a late goal, but the gap was too large as Brockport won the game 18-8.
The Green and Gold bettered the Bengals in all aspects of the game today such as shots (41-20), ground balls (21-11), and draw controls (16-12). Brockport was very successful on the clear today, completing 20-21 attempts.
Conklin led the scoring for the Golden Eagles with five goals and an assist, while Grapevine ended with three goals and three assists.
Jillian Babinsky led the defense with two caused turnovers and four ground balls, where
Nikki Nolan scooped up three ground balls.
Sarah Brown didn't let the snow freeze her up as she ended with nine saves on the afternoon through 60-minutes of play.
Brockport stay at home for their next SUNYAC matchup against SUNY Potsdam Saturday April 21, with the time set to start at 12 p.m.
