BUFFALO, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday evening with a doubleheader sweep against D'Youville College. The Golden Eagles move to 10-8 on the season with the wins, while the Spartans fall to 4-8.
Game 1: Win, 9-4
The Green and Gold came to hit in the opening game today, reaching base safely 16 times in the seven inning game.
Meghan Cullen led the squad with three hits, while
Karleigh Eaton and
Aren Schwab both had multi-hit games as well.
Schwab got the scoring started in the top of the second for Brockport when she lined a single up the middle to score
Jessica Koneski from third. She later came all the way around the bases and crossed the plate on a base knock from
Alexis Ross, putting Brockport up 3-0 early.
D'Youville did some scoring of their own in their next two innings at the plate, taking their first lead of the night at 4-3 in the bottom of the third. A one-two-three top of the fourth for Brockport saw things looking bleak with just a few innings to play, but the bats were not done yet.
After Cullen and
Casey Danko led off the top of the fifth with a base hit and a walk, the next two batters made outs to leave two on with two outs for
Karleigh Eaton. The senior did not disappoint, lining a single up the middle to score Cullen, tying the game. The threat was not done yet however, as after an
Alison Missavage walk loaded the bases,
Kacie Hubbard came through with a clutch three-RBI double to right center field, re-gaining the lead for the Green and Gold at 7-4. Schwab capped off the inning with her second RBI single of the day, scoring Hubbard from third and extending the lead yet again.
Brockport would add one more run in the top of the sixth, using a line drive double from
Lindsay Wachna to take a commanding 9-4 lead that they would never relinquish.
Julia Palopoli picked up her fourth win of the season, pitching the first four innings of the contest to the tune of four runs on six hits.
Amanda Colon came on to throw the last three from the circle, putting together her best appearance of the year, allowing just one hit without a Spartan runner crossing the plate.
Game 2: Win, 5-3
Becky Knorr picked up her third win of the season in the back half of the doubleheader, allowing just two runs through five innings of work while striking out three. The senior excelled at creating weak contact from the D'Youville hitters, forcing eight ground outs in the game.
The scoring got started right away in this game, as Cullen and Wachna each lined RBI hits in the top of the first to put the Golden Eagles up 2-0. They'd add three more in the top of the second off of RBI's from Cullen and Danko, and the five runs would end up being all they'd need in this game.
Danko was the only Brockport player with a multi-hit game in this one, but six other Golden Eagles also knocked base hits. Those hits came when it mattered too, as Brockport left just five players on base compared to the Spartans 11.
Colon had her second straight strong outing, and was rewarded with her first save of the season. The senior threw the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits and fanning one.
The Golden Eagles will get their home slate started this weekend when they host doubleheaders against Fredonia and Buffalo State on Friday and Saturday.
