PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse season came to the end in the semi-finals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) playoffs Wednesday afternoon, falling to Plattsburgh State 6-4. The Golden Eagles end the year with a 5-9 record, including a 3-3 mark in conference play.
The opening quarter was a defensive battle for both teams, as neither side could find the back of the net through the first 15 minutes of action. Brockport shut down Plattsburgh offense as they could only register two shots on frame on five attempts. Senior Defenders
Steven Gurin and
Pat Quinlivan were responsible for the lock down efforts, causing the Cardinals to turn the ball over a combined three times. The Green and Gold struggled on the offensive third as they could only manage four shots on goal, which none found the back of the net.
The defensive battled continued in the second quarter as they first goal of the game was scored in the final minute of play. After a costly Plattsburgh penalty, Brockport found themselves on a man-up opportunity.
Patrick Sheridan,
Jake Recor, and
Brendan Halleran fired off consecutive shots, but were unable to find the back of the net to keep the game scoreless. Brockport suffered a goal late in the second, when Plattsburgh converted on a face-break attempt to take a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Brockport came out stumbling in the third quarter as the Cardinals added two goals to pull away, 3-0. The Golden Eagles collected themselves and tallied three goals in the final seven minutes of the third. Sheridan opened the scoring up on a fast-break opportunity, when he scored on a quick catch-and-shoot from
Corey Choberka. After another Plattsburgh goal,
Nick Daigle rifled a shot far side into the net, to set the score at 4-2.
Liam O'Connor kept the offense rolling when he smoked his shot top corner, to cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the final quarter.
The Golden Eagles fell behind in the first few minutes of the fourth, when the Cardinals notched a goal to extend their lead to 5-3. The Green and Gold kept fighting and eventually scored to come within one, 5-4. Sheridan caught the ball on the run and sent a missile of a shot far post into the back of the net. Brockport continued to keep the offensive pressure up, but the Cardinals defense kept fending off any threat. With two minutes remaining the Green and Gold called a time out for one last attempt to tie the game up. After the time-stoppage, O'Connor found himself with the last shot to even the score up, but the Cardinals goalie saved it. Plattsburgh added a last second goal to end the game by a final score of 6-4.
Brockport was led offensively by Sheridan who ended with a pair of goals, where O'Connor and Daigle added one apiece. Senior
Colton Oliver finished the game handing out two assists and picking up a ground ball.
Quinlivan led the defense with two caused turnovers, where Gurin,
CJ Parker, and
Zach Cook record one each.
Goalie
Dallas Meyers played the majority of the game racking up 16 saves.
With his outstanding play throughout SUNYAC tournament, Meyers was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Brockport men's lacrosse season comes to a close today, but the Golden Eagles will return a wealth of talent from this year's team to the 2019 roster, as they look to continue their pursuit of a SUNYAC title.
