CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's lacrosse team fell in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship game to SUNY Cortland Saturday afternoon, 19-5. The Golden Eagles end their 2018 campaign with a 9-9 record, where the Red Dragons move to 15-4.
Brockport fell behind early as Cortland scored on their first possession of the game, to take a 1-0 lead.
Victoria Thompson answered for the Golden Eagles on the next possession on a quick catch-and-shoot goal from
Andrea Zlinsky to tie the game, 1-1. The Green and Gold stumbled over the next 13 minutes of play, as the Red Dragons notched five straight to pull away 6-1.
Sara Grapevine ending the scoring drought when she slotted a free position attempt top corner to cut the deficit to 6-2. After a Cortland goal,
Dana Kiselica responded with a free position goal set the score at 7-3. Brockport fought hard for the remainder of the half, but struggled to keep up with the Red Dragons as they pulled away 14-3 heading into halftime.
The Golden Eagles battled back in the second half on both ends of the field, but it was not enough as Cortland claimed the victory. Goalie
Sarah Brown picked up the pace in the final 30 minutes shutting down the Red Dragons offense racking up 10 saves, 18 on the day. Thompson finished strong offensively and she constantly had good shots on net, none which she could convert.
Samantha Dooling made an immediate impact off the bench as she was the first Golden Eagle to score off a feed from
Margaret Smith in the second half.
Heather Conklin was the next to cash-in for the Green and Gold, when she made a cut up the middle and received a pass from Grapevine to beat the opposing goalie. Brockport never gave up as they battled it out with Cortland, but the first half gap was too large to make the comeback.
Grapevine ended the game with a goal and an assist, while Thompson, Conklin, Kiselica, and Dooling finished with one each.
Tess Knight had a strong outing defensively with two caused turnovers and a groundball, and
Jillian Babinsky recording one caused turnover.
Nikki Nolan was a key player in the 12 successful clears for Brockport, as she took the ball the distance on most of the attempts.
Ashley Tack went toe-to-toe in the draw control circle with Cortland as she helped lead the Green and Gold to 10 draw control wins.
Other contributors on the game were
Nicole Geoghan who locked down the Red Dragons top attackers, and
Taylor Thomas offensively who caused havoc to Cortland's defense.
For their impressive play throughout the SUNYAC tournament, Kiselica, Grapevine, Conklin, and Brown were all selected for the All-Tournament team.
The Brockport women's lacrosse season comes to the end today, but the Golden Eagles will return a wealth of talent to the 2019 roster, as they continue their journey for a SUNYAC title.
