BROCKPORT, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's soccer team defeated Elmira College Tuesday afternoon, by a score of 4-0. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season while the Soaring Eagles drop to 1-6.
Â
After an uncharacteristic loss on the road last weekend, the Golden Eagles looked to bounce back in their matchup against Elmira College. The first half saw a familiar high-powered Brockport offense, registering 17 shots in the first half— ten of which Elmira's goalkeeper was forced to make a save. The pitch was slanted toward the Soaring Eagles net-minder for the entirety of the first 45. At the 33rd minute mark of the first half, Quinton Volpe took a shot from outside the box that looked like it could go but Elmira's goalkeeper sprawled out to make the save. Brockport struggled to capitalize on offensive chances early on in this matchup, allowing the Soaring Eagles to escape the half tied, 0-0.
Â
The second half started exactly how the Golden Eagles wanted it to; with a big goal from one of their leaders.
Jeff Hibbard scored his third of the season after a beautiful header-pass from Quinton Volpe, putting Brockport in the lead, 1-0. The Green and Gold opened the floodgates when 12 minutes later when Aj Sinclair, stole the ball from an Elmira forward and took it to the net himself, scoring his first of the 2018 campaign. The Golden Eagles tasted blood in the water when
Nikolas Sgaraglio, found Freshman
Zach Langelotti, who chipped the ball past the Elmira net-minder and advanced Brockport lead, 3-0. The Golden Eagles would find their final tally of the game when
Alex Giordano found himself on a breakaway and beat the Elmira goalkeeper to the bottom right of the net. Â While the offense did its job tonight, so did the defense, holding Elmira's attackers to six shots on net, all of which were turned away by
Tautis Poniskaitis, who recorded his second shutout of the season.
Â
"I was impressed with our patients, even though we didn't score in the first half, we were composed," said head coach Gary Lapietra "It was a nice bounce-back win and a great training day to get ready for our conference."
Â
The Golden Eagles will have a short turnaround as they're back in action Friday, Sept. 21 for a SUNYAC matchup, against the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
