Golden Eagles Clinch First SUNYAC Matchup

Box Score The College at Brockport women's soccer team fended off Plattsburgh State on Friday for a crucial State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win, 2-1.

The victory moves Brockport to a 4-3 record and 1-0 mark in SUNYAC play. The
Cardinals fall to 5-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play.

The Golden Eagles battled through the first 45 minutes of this matchup. Between the excessive heat and the early foul trouble, the Golden Eagles got off to a slow start. Kimberly Lubanski was on fire in this one, as she was forced to make a few big saves early. At the 8' minute, Marissa Greiner, challenged the Cardinals goalkeeper with a rocket from a step inside the box but was turned away. The rest of the half saw two evenly matched clubs battling for the first goal of the game. It looked like Bri Kovarik would have a go at the 25' minute mark, after she beat a few Cardinal defenders and rattled a shot off the crossbar. The play was back and forth the remainder of the half, with both teams unable to capitalize on the offensive side of the pitch, sending both squads into the half scoreless.

The second half began with more of the same tempo from both teams, the heat playing a huge factor in the speed of this one. Lubankski continued her stellar performance from the first 45, making a huge save early in the half.  The tide began to turn following the first ten minutes of play, as the Golden Eagles began to pour on the offensive pressure. After being robbed of a goal in the first half, Bri Kovarik found the back of the net off of a beautiful cross pass from Freshman, Kayla Bailey.  The early second half goal gave the Green and Gold momentum for the remainder of the half, allowing the Brockport offense to showcase their skill and speed. Play stayed in Brockports favor until a foul in the Golden Eagles box lead to a penalty kick, tying the game for the Cardinals, 1-1. Brockport would stay tied for less than a minute, as Lindsey Lovett threw ball across the Plattsburgh box, finding Maddie Siclair for her 4th goal this season. The Golden Eagles would go on to win by a score of 2-1.

"I think we're all really happy wit the character and quality we showed today," said head coach Mike Idland " The determination was great, and the goals were special."

The Green and Gold are back in action tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 22 when they host SUNY Postdam for a 1 p.m. matchup.
