BUFFALO, N.Y.- The College at Brockport men's soccer team defeated the Medaille College Mavericks Tuesday afternoon, by a score of 3-1. With the win, the Golden Eagles advance to 2-1 on the season while the Mavericks drop to 0-1-1.
Â
The Green and Gold found themselves behind early in this one, as the Mavericks came out and delivered a strike three and a half minutes into competition. Brockport would not let that early hiccup decide the outcome as they battled back for much of the first half. In the 42
nd minute, a Mavericks foul granted Brockport a free kick outside the box. The Medaille defense was caught off guard when Brockport's
Nolan Byrnes seized the opportunity, netting his first goal as a Golden Eagle and equalizing the score at one before the end of the half.
Â
The Golden Eagles came out flying in the second half, using the momentum they earned from a late first-half goal. It looked like
Jeff Hibbard would have the go-ahead goal in the ninth minute after Quinton Volpe's solo effort beat a few defenders and found Hibbard, who rung it off the crossbar. Finally, Brockport's offensive pressure would reach its boiling point at the 75
th minute when
Chris Kinsley took a corner that was kicked in by a Mavericks defender, resulting in an "own goal" that put Brockport ahead, 2-1. The Green and Gold would not stop there. Less than a minute later Quinton Volpe found the back of the net on an unassisted play, putting the game out of reach for the Mavericks 3-1.
Â
"The effort was outstanding considering we've played three games in five days," said head coach Gary Lapietra " I was disappointed that we gave up a goal early but we kept our composure and played a fantastic second half."
Â
The men's soccer team will have another short turnaround as they're back in action on Thursday, Sept. 6 on the road at Alfred University.
