BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball team pushed their win streak to two, picking up a big 61-51 win over conference opponent SUNY Fredonia at home Tuesday night. The team improves to 8-10 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
The Golden Eagles led the Blue Devils through all four quarters, rounding out a solid day offensively. Guards
Allison Chiera and
Bailey Pratt opened up the night hot, sinking back to back from three. From there, the Green and Gold switched things up, demanding the paint for the remainder of the quarter.
Julianna Taylor,
Zaria McCullough, and
Emily Merrill each added solo points under the basket, led by
Emily Nestler who powered through for three consecutive boards.
A strong defensive effort proved essential for the Golden Eagles to start the second as they struggled to find offensive opportunities. Pratt and McCullough allowed the Green and Gold to maintain their lead just before the half; McCullough putting up four with a set of free throws followed by a fast break layup and Pratt netting five, with a jumper in the paint and a strong three from the elbow just before the buzzer.
The Green and Gold really settled into their own in the third, demanding the majority of the quarter offensively with a 12-point run to improve their lead to 10. Pratt sank two more from three, allowing her to finish the night 4-7 from the perimeter. Taylor and
Chelsea Henry continued the fight from the inside, each adding four of their own.
Henry's quick feet and swift ball movement were key for the Golden Eagles in holding off the Blue Devils, as the freshman pulled down nine rebounds and collected five steals while also putting up nine points. Nestler and Pratt were the offensive dynamic duo, Pratt putting up 14, 12 of which were from the outside, while Nestler took care of the paint, adding 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a steal on the night.
The Golden Eagles continue their home stand this weekend starting on Friday where they will take on SUNY New Paltz at 5:30 p.m.
