Brockport Rings In 2019 With 84-76 Victory Over Alfred University

ALFRED, N.Y.—The College at Brockport men's basketball team began their second half of the season with an 84-76 win over Alfred University. The results move the Golden Eagles record to 7-4 overall, while the Saxons are handed their second loss of the season and drop to 7-2.

The Green and Gold quickly nabbed the lead after a pair of free-throw makes by Justin Summers brought the score to 3-2 at the 18:07 mark. From there, Antonio Alvarez converted a layup and later scored a three bringing the score to 11-2 in under two minutes. The Saxons pushed back to cut the deficit to four on multiple occasions, but the Green and Gold reciprocated with a push of their own. Jahidi Wallace ran down the court for a fast break layup, before Devante Hagins converted a pair of free-throws. Danny Ashley scored a layup of his own, and then Chris Atkinson hit two from the charity stripe to give the team a double-digit advantage. Despite getting into foul trouble, Brockport was able to compete as a unit to take a 41-32 lead into halftime.

The Saxons continued to be resilient, using a strong run to cut the score to 49-48 at the 15:53 mark of the second half. However, the Golden Eagles never surrendered the advantage as scores by Atkinson, Ashley, Wallace and Alvarez stopped any oppositional run and gave the team some breathing room. Seven straight points by Brockport helped put the game out of reach as the lead was extended to 11 with 7:58 left in regulation. Multiple Golden Eagles were sent to the free-throw line towards the end of the matchup, but they were able to convert and the team earned the victory, 84-76.

Atkinson led the way in scoring with 21 points in 31 minutes of play, while adding seven assists and four steals. Alvarez stood out in his first career start, recording a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes. Hagins chipped in with 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Off the bench, Ashley and Wallace combined to score 17 points.

The Golden Eagles remain on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 8 as they travel to Buffalo State for a State University of New York Athletic Conference battle that is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
