Oneonta, NY – The College at Brockport men's soccer team was on the road for a crucial matchup with the Oneonta Red Dragons on Friday. Brockport won a nail-biter in overtime, 3-2, improving to 7-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play.
The Green and Gold hand Oneonta its first SUNYAC loss of the season and first loss at home. Brockport snapped Oneonta's seven-game win streak with the overtime win.
The hosting Red Dragons got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 17
th minute of the match. However, it was not long before Brockport's
Jeff Hibbard would score on a penalty kick opportunity to tie the game up at 1-1.
After entering halftime with the score even, it was Oneonta who found the back of the net to break the tie. A goal in the 73
rd minute gave the home team a 2-1 edge. The Golden Eagles would answer once again, this time it was
Brett Healey who beat the Oneonta goalkeeper for the equalizer. Healey's goal would be the last score in regulation, sending the match to overtime.
A huge save by senior goalie,
Tautis Poniskaitis would help keep the game tied at 2-2 at the end of the first overtime period. In the 103
rd minute of the match,
Jeff Hibbard became the hero with his second goal of the game being the game-winner.
Poniskaitis came away with seven saves in the win, as Brockport continues to fight for a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament.
The Golden Eagles are on the road again Saturday for another critical conference contest against New Paltz. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 1 pm.
