Brockport, NY -- The Brockport men's soccer team (5-4-1) takes the field this weekend for two conference matchups at home. First on the list is Potsdam (3-7-1) on Friday at 4 pm, followed by Plattsburgh (3-6) Saturday at 1 pm.
What Happened Last: The Golden Eagles dropped a tough 1-0 decision their last time out when they took on Oswego away from home. The Green and Gold managed a 21-14 shot advantage and also had 12 corner kick opportunities compared to six from the hosting Lakers. However, a penalty kick after a foul in the box in the second half to lifted the Oswego to victory.
Tautis Poniskaitis stopped five shots in net for Brockport in the loss.
Home Sweet Home: Brockport is finally back on its home turf this weekend after four straight road games. The team is an undefeated 3-0 at home so far this season, outscoring opponents 13-2. The Green and Gold have been victorious against Medaille, Clarkson, and Westminster all on the home field this year.
Team Statistics: Stefaniw is currently fourth overall in the SUNYAC with 15 points from five goals and five assists. He is also tied for second with 33 shots on the season, 22 of which have landed on target. The team as a whole has outscored its opponents, 21-12, with an average of 2.10 goals scored per game. Poniskaitis has also accumulated 28 saves in net for Brockport.
Conference Picture: With road losses last weekend against conference foes, the Golden Eagles are currently behind in the SUNYAC standings. Cortland and Oswego are atop the conference with 2-0 marks in league play, tallying six points Brockport will aim to bounce back from an 0-2 start in SUNYAC play this weekend to catch back up on the standings.
Potsdam Matchup: Brockport defeated the Bears last year on their own field with a score of 2-0.
Jason Hayes had the assist on the game winning goal, while
Tautis Poniskaitis made three saves to record the shutout. Potsdam is currently 1-1 in conference play, defeating Buffalo State and falling to Fredonia last weekend. The Bears have yet to find a win on the road this season.
Against Plattsburgh: The Green and Gold beat Plattsburgh twice last season including a 2-0 win in the SUNYAC quarterfinals.
Jeff Hibbard assisted on the first score of the contest and
Matthew Stefaniw had the second goal to seal the deal. The Cardinals are also 1-1 in conference play, with a win over Fredonia and a loss to Buffalo State. The team is 0-2 on the road this season and have just one win over its last four matches.
