BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's basketball had a quick break to recoup before prepping to welcome Oswego and Cortland to the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium this upcoming weekend. The Golden Eagles will open up SUNYAC conference play with the Lakers on Friday at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Red Dragons Saturday at 2 p.m.
First Five: The Golden Eagles opened the season with three straight victories, including a thrilling 65-64 win at RIT and two wins over Alfred and Keuka to lock up the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament. Brockport sits at 3-2 overall headed into conference action this weekend.
Non-Conference Play: The Golden Eagles are coming off of a tough non-conference week where they saw defeat at the hands of both the YellowJackets from Rochester and the Herons from William Smith College. Julianna Taylor led the offense in both matchups, netting 15 total points against the YellowJackets, while grabbing two rebounds and three steals. The junior then allowed the Golden Eagles to close the gap against the Herons, grabbing 13 more points, in addition to four rebounds, four assists and a steal. The Green and Gold also saw strong performances from Kylee Rosbrook (11), Chelsea Henry (11), Riqiya Harris (13) and Erin Radack (12).
Team Leaders: Through the first five games, Rosbrook and Taylor have been the driving offensive forces for the Golden Eagles, averaging 13.8 and 11.6 per game respectively. Rosbrook is also leading the Green and Gold on the glass with 38 total rebounds and 11 blocks. The sophomore has been lights out from the free throw line, sinking nine of 10. Bailey Pratt and Radack have continuously provided strength from the perimeter. Pratt is shooting .286 and Radack .412 with help from Zaria McCullough who currently leads the team in assists with 14.
Presence in the Paint: Rosbrook ranks 61st in the country and first in the conference with 11 blocked shots this season. Her average of 2.20 blocks per game ranks in the top 50 in the nation. She also ranks third in the SUNYAC and 69th nationally, shooting 52.7% from the floor. Rosbrook has reached double figures in scoring in each game this season and she also has one double-double after helping the green and gold win the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament with 12 points and 13 rebounds against Keuka.
Conference Opening Split: The Golden Eagles met these two teams at a similar point in the 2018 season, picking up their first conference win and loss on the road. The team started off the weekend with a close 10-point loss to the Red Dragons, with Taylor posting 11 points and four rebounds. The green and gold shot a strong 55% from the free throw line while finishing the day shooting 32% from the floor and 21% from three. The Golden Eagles were able to capitalize on the Red Dragons weaknesses, grabbing 19 points off turnovers.
The Green and Gold then turned their luck around against the Lakers, evening out their conference record at 1-1. The Lakers led the Golden Eagles after one, however wouldn't see another lead for the remainder of the game. The green and gold came out the gates hot with Pratt putting up eight points while shooting 50% from both the perimeter and the floor. Much of Brockport's success in the first half came from their strength off the boards, collectively grabbing 28 rebounds, 18 of which were on Oswego's half of the court. Pratt closed out the afternoon with 17 points and three rebounds, nailing five of nine from the perimeter.
Laker Leaders: The Lakers enter Friday's matchup with a similar 3-2 record as the Golden Eagles against non-conference opponents, averaging 63.8 points per game. The Lakers offense is currently being led by Ramatoulaye Sy who is averaging 20.0 points per game and shooting .476 from the floor. The sophomore also leads the team under the basket with 64 total rebounds, averaging 12.8 per game. She also has 13 steals. Sy is joined by Sydni Eure, who averages 16.0 points per game while shooting an impressive .507 from the floor. Eure averages 12.2 rebounds per game and she also has 13 steals.
Red Dragon Leaders: The Red Dragons are coming off of a 69-43 win over Elmira College, putting them at 3-1 overall. Cortland is averaging 68.5 points per game, led by Beth Bonin who is averaging 18.8 points per game, 4.3 rebounds and four assists. The senior has also been dominant from all areas of the floor, shooting .466 from the floor and .484 from three. The Red Dragons strongest performance came in their season opener against Hartwick College where they shot .463 as a team, putting up 79 points, 15 assists and 11 steals.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles have a short hiatus before heading on the road for the Saint Vincent Tournament in Pittsburgh, PA on December 19th and 20th where they will face off against St. Vincent College and Hartwick College.
