Men's Hoops Welcomes Oswego & Cortland to Begin SUNYAC Play

Brockport, NY – The College at Brockport men's basketball team is at home this weekend to open up SUNYAC play. The team will welcome Oswego for a 7:30 pm start on Friday before taking on Cortland at 4 pm on Saturday.

Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles traveled down to Pittsburgh, PA for a matchup with Salisbury University in the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational last weekend. They snuck out a close win, 75-69, as four players scored in the double-figures. Malick Sylla scored a game-high 18 points, while Justin Summers finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Tyler Collins contributed with 10 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Gaining Momentum: The Green and Gold now stand at 3-1 overall on the season after the win over Salisbury. The team has won three in a row and has only played one home game to this point. With wins over Salisbury, Medaille, and Hobart, Brockport carries valuable momentum into the beginning of conference play this upcoming weekend.

Sixth Man: Malick Sylla has been crucial off the bench during the team's three game win streak. Scoring at least 10 points in three consecutive contests, Sylla is averaging 13 points a game during this stretch. Ranked third on the team in scoring, his production from a reserve role has led to Brockport's bench outscoring the opponent's bench in all three wins.

Statistical Leaders: Justin Summers currently leads the team with averages of 19 points and 7.5 boards per game. Jahidi Wallace is right behind him in both categories, posting 14.8 points and 4.3 boards a night. Tyler Collins is tops on the team averaging 3.5 assists each game, while Danny Ashley has been snagging 2.5 steals a game.

SUNYAC Opener: Friday's matchup with Oswego will mark the first SUNYAC battle of the 2019-20 season for Brockport. Last year the team finished 11-7 in conference play and made it to the SUNYAC Finals against Oswego. In the first conference game last season the Green and Gold took down Cortland on the road, 78-69. Justin Summers put up a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding four blocks.

Scouting Oswego: The last time these two teams met it was in the conference title game last season. Oswego defeated Brockport, 55-50, in a close game from start to finish. The Lakers have started this year out strong with a 4-1 overall record. They most recently fell to St. Lawrence on the road, 83-82. Jeremiah Sparks led all scorers with 27 in the game, while teammate Joe Sullivan posted a 16 and 16 double-double. Oswego has four players averaging over 10 points a game, with Brandan Gartland leading the way with 16 per game.

Scouting Cortland: The Red Dragons are 1-1 to start the year and will face Geneseo on Friday before Saturday's meeting with Brockport. Cortland defeated Purchase, 87-86, to start the season on a last second shot. The team then fell to Ithaca, 77-74, in its most recent contest. Eric Edwards is the leading scorer, averaging 26.5 points a game so far. Austn Grunder is currently averaging a double-double, with 18 points and 19 rebounds a game.

What's Next: After this two-game home stand the Golden Eagles will fly south to play in the Mauro Panaggio Tournament in Daytona Beach, FL. They will face St. Joseph's College of Maine on December 15th at 2 pm on day one of the event.
