Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brockport Loses In Heartbreaking Fashion, 69-67

BROCKPORT, N.Y.,- The College at Brockport men's basketball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup against SUNY New Paltz that went down to the wire. The Golden Eagles fought back from a late eight point deficit, but couldn't complete the comeback losing by a score of 69-67.

The Green and Gold hold an 11-8 overall record and a mark of 7-5 in conference games, while the Hawks sit at 11-8 as well, and 6-6 in SUNYAC competition.

Brockport's early offense came courtesy of freshman guard, Danny Ashley, as he scored the team's first six points. Justin Summers was also a focal point as he drew early double teams, but still managed eight first half points. Thanks to some even scoring from Ashley, Summers, Jahidi Wallace (seven points), and Devante Hagins (six points), Brockport took a 35-32 lead going into halftime.

The second half of the game began with Summers getting his way as he scored the Golden Eagle's first six points of the frame. New Paltz used a 14-2 run to take a 50-46 lead, but Brockport was not going away easy. An exchange of buckets and runs, solid play from Montgomery Stroman and Chris Atkinson, and a relentless full court press kept the game close.

With 1:12 remaining in the game, Hagins hit a free throw line jumper to bring the game to 68-66 deficit. After multiple failed offensive possessions, Brockport relied on its defense to get multiple late game stops to keep the game in reach. The peak of this included a huge block by Summers against an attempted dunk by the opposition. With fortunate missed free throws from New Paltz, the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the game down 69-66 with nine seconds remaining. Ashley was fouled before a shot could be attempted, and he was sent to the line for two. After making the first, Ashley purposely missed the second and the ball went out of bounds off the Hawks. With one last chance, Brockport inbounded to Summers for a nice look, but the shot fell off the back iron.

Brockport was led by Summers in scoring with 15 points, but he also grabbed 11 rebounds, while blocking two shots. Hagins recorded a double-double of his own, knocking down 14 points and collecting 10 rebounds. Ashley was all over the court, scoring 11 points and grabbing four boards. He also dished out four assists and stole the ball twice, while blocking one.

The Green and Gold are back in action Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. against another SUNYAC opponent, SUNY Oneonta.
